SDF Suggestions

Responses to suggestions from program evaluations

Offer more flexible schedules. Love BOSU only problem they only offered it in morning. Maybe offer a few more classes on Friday,Saturday and Sundays.

SRC Response:

Hopefully the Spring schedule is more accommodating.  We do our best to offer classes throughout the day so busy students and professionals can fit them into their schedules.  This semester we also offer BOSU classes in the morning, afternoon, evening, and on Saturday.  Our schedule is highly dependent on instructor availability and skill.  We have expanded our Friday schedule, however, the majority of our instructors had other commitments on Saturday and Sunday so we are unable to offer more classes at this time.  We will work on adding more classes in future semesters!

Participant Comment:

More zumba. Maybe a special workshop with Vanessa Lupercio. azzumba.com She's a national trainer and really good teacher. It's a great resource to have so close.

More classes in the morning and evening. Hard to fit afternoon classes in with class.

SRC Response:

Your comments have been heard, and we have multiple Zumba classes this semester!  We had a workshop with Vanessa Lupercio in July, where 3 of our intructors were certified (Nohora, Brittany, and Michelle).  We are bringing her back to certify 4 more instructors April 25-26th, and encourage participants to attend the certification then audition for our program to teach on the SDF schedule!  This semester we have also added more morning and evening classes.  We have some difficulty because we share Small Gym space with academic programs and sport clubs, but we do our best to offer a comprehensive schedule.

Try ballet work outs? Ex: NYC ballet workout. Clips available on youtube. A lot of instructors have a dance background and we already have modern/lyrical (dance expressions) and latin (zumba), so ballet would be cool.

SRC Response:

We hear you!  We have added Ballet Fit and Tone to our schedule this semester, on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6:30 with Danielle.  Since this is a specialized class our ability to offer it is based on the skill sets of instructors.  We are lucky to have Danielle, an experienced dance teacher, on our staff so please attend and enjoy!

I could not ask for more... this fall program was the best so far since I joined SRC... thanks a million to all instructors for the wonderful work... I found myself attending each class offered at noon and looking forward to each of them every day I became more active thanks to these classes. Please keep the noon classes as diversified as they were for the fall.
Thanks a million!

SRC Response:

Thank you very much for your kudos to our instructors.  We are very proud of their hard work and dedication to making the SDF program great!  We have a very nice and diverse noon schedule this semester with multiple classes to choose from!  Enjoy!

I would really appreciate more evening and weekend classes. I am a graduate student with a full schedule during the day, so it is hard for me to get to any of those. Also, the equipment should be better inspected and replaced, especially the resistance bands. I have seen several snap on people this semester, and the number of ones available is dwindling. I've also been quite annoyed by the people (I guess on tours of the campus) watching classes through the windows. Otherwise most of your instructors are great and I have really enjoyed the program.

SRC Response:

Hopefully the Spring schedule will suit your schedule better.  We have worked on adding more evening classes.  However, due to the schedules of our instructors we were unable to expand the weekend schedule.  We will work on that for future semesters.  We have replaced most of the tubing in the small gyms.  Due to the dry weather in Arizona, the rubber often does become brittle and needs to be replaced regularly.  We will continue evaluating the equipment each semester.  Regarding people looking in the windows, this is something that we cannot really control since the 2nd floor is mainly open recreation.  When people come on tours it is inevitable that they may peek in the class.  Hopefully this does not disrupt the workouts too much.

Participant Comment:

The floors are quite dusty and grimy. Kinda gross when you are lying on a mat looking across the floor.

SRC Response:

The SRC staff sweeps the floors in all of the gyms multiple times during the day and deep cleans once a week.  However, due to the volume of people that utilize the gyms sometimes the floors may be dirty during your class.  We will continue working on keeping the floors cleaner!

Participant Comment:

Please do not have a full class do sprinting (suicides) across the room. It is really dangerous and I stopped going to Kickboxing because I was worried I would get trampled.

SRC Response:

It is SDF policy to not do suicides if there are more than 10 students in a class because of the risk of injury.  The instructors are also able to give participants other activities in the event that there is an exercise that you are not comfortable with.  Thank you for recognizing a potentially dangerous situation.

Participant Comment:

I would like to see more step classes that employees can attend at lunchtime and after 5pm (with good teachers). I don't like boxing or dancing and I can't do any drills that are especially hard on the knees.

SRC Response:

Since we are a teaching facility and all of the instructors are student employees, we are able to offer classes based on the skill sets and schedules of our instructors.  Step is one of the hardest formats to teach, and a number of our instructors are working diligently to improve their skills.  This semester we are lucky to have more instructors that can teach step available after 5 pm so I hope you enjoy their classes.

Participant Comment:

Include ways for those of us over 50, with bad knees, with exercise options during On the Ball classes to reduce knee stress.

SRC Response:

Our instructors are able to modify all of their exercises to make sure that all participants get a good workout.  If you let the instructor know before the class starts that you have bad knees or any other injury they will be happy to make sure to add other options.

As an employee of ASU and a member of the SRC, why do employees have to pay a higher rate? All members should pay the same rate for the service or class.

SRC Response:

The price differences should be viewed more as a "student discount" rate rather than a higher rate for employees/non-students.  We try to make our programs first and foremost accessible and affordable for students since they are the main focus for the university.  Many other programs within ASU and the community have varied pricing to allow students to enjoy a discounted/lower rate, and we are no exception to this, we just phrase it a little differently.

Participant Comment:

Better trained instructors, better match between instructor skills and class. CLEAN rooms. Enough equipment to do classes (by the end of the semester there were not enough of some items, elastic bands...)  The rooms really need to be cleaned, the dust bunnies are absolutely ridiculous.

SRC Response:

All of the SDF instructors (with the exception of the program director) are full-time ASU students and are continually working on their skills.  Most have completed our in-house teacher training program and work very hard to put together choreography and workout routines.  Some instructors may be newer than others, but they are all very committed to working at becoming better instructors.  We do workshops once a month to hone their skills, and they are encouraged to attend outside trainings as well.  They can only become better with experience.

We work on keeping the rooms clean with regular sweeping and floor cleaning.  It is often difficult with the number of people that utilize our space, but we will continue working at this.

We have replaced many of the elastic tubing that broke last semester.  We will continue to try and maintain our equipment, due to the recent budget issues facing the university we are limited in our purchasing abilities.

More Zumba classes

SRC Response:

You should be very happy to see that on the Spring schedule we have Zumba Monday through Friday!  We are also certifying more instructors this semester and over the summer so we may be able to offer it even more frequently.
