Suggestions
Patron Comment Dec 2011: I would love to see the existing squash court modified to meet regulation size and the adjacent raquetball court converted to squash as well”
SRC Response: We are researching how to change the line to the current court. We were just informed about the height discrepancy a few months ago. With regard to the additional court being installed, as part of the expansion/renovation upcoming, we are planning on installing a movable back wall in court 6. This would allow for squash play, while still being available for racquetball during our large tournaments.
Patron Comment, Nov 2011: I’ve been using the SRC for over 15 years, and have never seen the women’s locker room as pitifully dirty. As I have for the last few months, I’ve starting picking up trash from the floor myself. The same stuff lays there for days. There is still a yellow container in the back of the locker room that was used for dripping water from the ceiling. What has happened to custodial services. It’s terrible.
SRC Response: I agree with you regarding the cleanliness of the SRC. The entire building needs to be better cleaned, especially the locker rooms. I had a meeting with the “powers to be” to discuss the necessary improvements. I hope that we will correct the problems quickly.
Patron Comment Nov 2011: I arrived this morning at Small Gym A at around 10:45am to find the mats around the punching bag dirty/covered in boot prints. While your staff was gracious enough to clean these mats for me, this caused a delay in my workout. While others may not, I adhere to the policy of “no shoes of any kind permitted on the mats, “and socks create a slip hazard, I work out bare foot. I have sent feedback in regards to the condition of these mats before and despite my request, cleaning equipment was not left in small gym A, nor was I sent any response. Please respond by email in regards to this matter be assured my feedback is received.
SRC Response: First off, thanks for following policy. You are correct, not all patrons do. However, we correct inappropriate behaviors as we see then. Unfortunately, we do not catch all policy violations. I agree with you regarding the cleanliness of the SRC. The entire building needs to be better cleaned, including Small Gym A.
Patron Comment Nov 2011: The locker rooms continue to be gross in the mornings. They used to be spotless – floors and bathroom stalls cleaned by 7am – but these days I cringe having to shower and change in there. Past three days floors have been so yucky – full of hair, spotty, dirty,. Does not appear sanitary in anyway L
SRC Response: We agree with you regarding the cleanliness of the SRC. The entire building needs to be better cleaned, especially the locker rooms.
Patron Comment Nov 2011: In the Women’s Locker Room a member of the cleaning staff entered, talking loudly on the phone. She entered a bathroom stall and proceeded to discuss personal matters at a volume I could hear her across the locker room. Please ask all staff members to take phone calls outside the locker rooms.
SRC Response: This request has been passed onto the custodial services supervisor.
Patron Comment Nov 2011: The locker rooms continue to be gross in the mornings. They used to be
spotless - floors and bathroom stalls cleaned by 7am - but these days I cringe having to shower and change in the there.
Past 3 days floors have been so yucky - full of hair, spotty, dirty. Does not appear sanitary in any way. :-(
SRC Response: ASU outsourced the custodial service to a company named Olympus. This transition occurred this past summer. It has been a struggle to get the job done as well as it has been performed over the past 20 years. We agree with you regarding the cleanliness of the SRC. The entire building needs to be better cleaned, especially the locker rooms.
Patron Comment, Sept. 2011: No water pressure in circuit Training room water fountain
SRC Response: Thank you for being observant and notifying us about this issue. We have sent this issue in as a service request to Facilities Management and hope to have it resolved very soon. Thank you.
Patron Comment, Sept. 2011: Fix the damn incline!! Its been over 2 months!!
SRC Response: Thank you for your concern. The 2 incline presses in the weight room went out of use during the flood at the SRC on August 10th, just over a month ago. The pads for these machines needed to be replaced due to water damage .Once we had approval to order them, the pads were ordered immediately. Due to the custom coloring of the pads (to make it match with the rest) it took 10 days to manufacture, followed by ship time. The pads were then installed on September 20th. Please feel free to contact us for any further issues or comments you may have.
Patron Comment 8/26/11: I think the SRC should add more punching bags. I tried the boxing class and it would have been alot better if there was even just 2-3 more.
SRC response: Hanging bags from the ceiling takes up space as each bag needs ample room around it in order to be used properly. The more bags we hang, the more potential floor space we take up. We are limited in the amount of space we currently have. Small Gym A is used for such a wide variety of groups and programs that adding more bags to the ceiling would take away from those groups. In addition, hanging and removing bags from the ceiling is a complicated process and we would prefer to just leave them in place once mounted, for safety. We appreciate your feedback and will look at the possibility of adding additional bags with our expansion.
Patron Comment 6/16/11: Over the summer, the Sun Devil Mind and Body classes, on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons/evenings have been scheduled back-to-back, meaning there is not even a 5 minute break between the end of one class and the beginning of another. This creates the unfortunate circumstance that one instructor either has to end class early, or another has to start class late. Please in the future, schedule at LEAST a 5 minute break period between classes (10-15 minutes would be ideal).
SRC response: Thanks for your comments. This was definitely an oversight on our part and we intend to always create the schedule with a break in between classes to allow a smooth transition.
Patron suggestion 5/17/11: The facility is filthy. Especially the women's locker room. Frankly, it's unsanitary. The new cleaning system, or in this case, completely lack there of, is not working. Please return to normal cleaning schedule. Thank you.
Floor in the locker room is terrible, zero soap, toilets are gross. The SRC is dirty! The women's locker room is dirty and disgusting. Floors dirty, hairballs in showers, generally unkempt.
I would like to let you know that the women's locker room was dirty this morning. It was always been in good shape bot today was really bad. The floor was dirty, the bathrooms were dirty, the there was hair on the floor (very disgusting) and there was no soap to wash your hands. I hope you can fix it. I've never seen the SRC so dirty - all the floors in the building, the locker room showers/floors/toilets were all disgusting. Ik now there was a switch in custodial duties as of Friday, but has there even been a cleaning crew since then? Sure doesn't look like it. Hope we see improvement (lots of it) very soon!!
SRC Response: I agree whole heartedly, the SRC has not been cleaned to the level it should be. In fact, it was not cleaned at all for 4 days. This is the result of the University outsourcing the custodial services. The company started Monday morning. They were not fully prepared to handle the whole project at once. We have met twice today and we realize that there is a learning curve that will be experienced. However, the learning curve should not impact the sanitary conditions of the SRC, as negatively as it has. Their management has assured us that the SRC will be cleaned much more effectively tonight and it will get better.
The company has been cleaning other facilities on campus for the past 4 years and they have received a lot of compliments. We should be out of this learning curve within the next few weeks.
I have passed your comment on to the company so they are aware of our patrons expectation. You should see a difference in the weeks to come.
Patron Suggestion 3/23/2011: Concerning the Sun Devil Fit & Cycle: I wish there were more "Just Dance" classes offered during the week. So far there isonly one a week. Others in the class have also expressed the desire formore of this class. Thanks!
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback! Our class schedules are determined mainly byclass popularity and instructor availability. Just Dance is a very popularclass and we would like to offer it twice per week in the Fall as long asCorinne or one of our other skilled dance instructors is available to teach! Thanks again for your comments, and please feel free to contact me if youhave more suggestions.
Patron Suggestion 3/11/2011:I play racquetball at the SRC courts in the mornings, usually around 8am. I noticed recently that only a few of the courts have lights on at that time of day, presumably to save energy. I appreciate that effort, but the lighted courts happen also to be the ones that get a really bad glare from the sunshine coming in at that time of the morning. Besides being a minor annoyance, this is also potentially dangerous when we're swinging racquets and get blinded by the sun. Could you turn on lights in several of the upstairs courts instead? They do not suffer from the early morning sun problems. Thanks!
SRC response: Thank you for contacting us regarding this situation. Yes the SRC does its part to conserve energy as much as we can around our facility by leaving lights off whenever possible until it is dark enough for the lights to be turned on. However, with racquetball courts, we understand the need for lighting when you are playing that sport and would like to advise you to ask our front desk staff to turn on the lights for the court you are playing in. We can turn them on from the front desk. We only ask that when you are done playing, you notify our staff again so that we can shut off the lights and continue to conserve energy. Thank you and please contact me should you have any further questions
Patron Suggestion 3/9/2011: wonder will you provide aerobic belly dance in thefuturefor the SDF? I think it would be an interesting class! No need to contactme, just giving feedback.
SRC response: Thanks for the idea - since belly dance is such a specialized form ofdance it is unlikely that we will be able to offer it as part of the SDF schedule. However, we can work on bringing it back to our instructionalprogram.
Patron Suggestion 3/02/2011:The Mens Lockerroom and showers have been a mess lately. Its seems like they are not cleaned on a regular basis. The floors of the lockerrooms should be mopped on a dialy basis and the showers should be cleaned on a regular time schedule. There has been so much trash and dust bunnies around the src it makes me want to choose another gym. Has there been a layoff of the maintenance staff? Are there any plans to keep the mens lockerroom clean on a regular basis.
SRC response: I am sorry that you have a unpleasant experience in the SRC recently. We have had two of our custodial staff out on leave, recently. Coupled with the handball tournament, the facility was not clean to the level that we expect either. I have reached out to the Supervisor of the Custodial Staff to find better solution for the situation like this in the future. We are investigating whether we can "borrow" a custodian from another facility when down more than one staff at a time.
Thanks for the comment.
Patron Suggestion 2/02/2011: Music in weightroom is too loud, even with my personal headphones on.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. We have been experiencing technical problems and are working to fix this problem. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Patron Suggestion 01/05/2011: Please consider changing the policy that a Sun Devil Fit class has to have at least two participants to take place. In cases where only one participant is there, both the instructor and the participant made the effort to be there so the instructor should get paid and the participant should get the great workout they came for. This policy sometimes makes me hesitant to come to classes that have low turnout in fear that I will be the only one and it will be canceled -- this probably contributes to low turnout for smaller classes.
SRC response: I have addressed this with my staff and they are to offer to teach an alternative class in the event of only one person showing up. Some classes are just awkward with one person (i.e., Zumba or step), but instructors should offer to put them through a workout or some sort of fitness regimen.
Patron Suggestion 12/16/2010:Is there a year-long locker rental option for faculty and staff. Its very annoying to get messages every semester, and sometimes forget the deadline due to travelling and final grading craze, and needing to collect your stuff from the equipment room. Anyway faculty is paying more why not for 100$, we can have it from September to September.. Please consider this suggestion! No need to contact me, just givin
SRC response: Thank You for contacting us with your concern. We do in fact offer faculty staff the option for a full year membership through our payroll deduction plan. This plan runs for $120 and an incremented amount is taken out of your paycheck. Your locker will not expire until you wish to cancel it, so you will never have to worry about expiration dates. We do not offer a plan that can be paid for at one time for the year however. If you would like to sign up for the payroll deduction plan, please stop by the SRC Admin desk to get started today. Please let us know if you have any further questions or comments.
Patron Suggestion 12/09/2010:As an on campus student who has a passion for sport, I feel SRC provides comfortable atmosphere and various facilities for students. The good news is due to the increasing students, SRC offical website says it is going to expand Tempe campus for additional 70,000 square feet. Students will have additional field space, courts, small gyms, multi-purpose rooms, meeting rooms and weight room/cardio space. However, the projected expansion neglect metion the additional facilities in the new space. In fact, SRC exists a shortage outdoor water fountain problem. And the fountain as an important facility for students should be increased no matter in the new field space or old.
According to my survey, almost 30 to 50 students are playing baskerball or tennis at the outside courts between 7 pm to 9 pm everyday, and a small gym just beside those two courts. More than 75% of students would like drinking water from water foutain instead of bring their own water. Some students think bring their own water bottle is bother, because they have to refill the bottle from water foutain several times. Other students think water fountain is free, and it is not worth buying water from machine vendor. Thus 5 or 10 students will need drinking water from the outside water fountain at the same time after a game, which resulted in students have to wait drinking water more than 2 minutes.
In addition, during exercise it is necessary to drink at least 24 ounces per hour of exercise. Since Arizona is extremely dry and water consumption is crucial during exercise, the inadequate water supply would easily cause dehydrated. In order to provide students a comfortable service and avoid dehydrated problem, students need one more outside water fountain in current SRC, and the projected expansion need pay attentation to build additional fountains in the expanding space.
In general, install a new drinking water fountain need dispenser/sink assembly, chilling unit, filter, electrical connections, plumbing connections, lumber/wood/wire, and tile. The estimated cost is $700 for 12 gallon per hour unit. I feel that SRC is able to pay the cost of buliding one more outside water fountain in current SRC.
Student Recreation Center strives to provide students with the progams, tools, and comfortable atmosphere. The more outside water foutain is necessary for students especially in Arizona. Moreover, SRC is trying to save natural resources and being green. The water fountain is an effective way to save students bring plastic bottles of water. Building one more outside water fountain is a small step for school, while it can make a big difference for environment.
I appreciate your time reading my email, and if you have any question about my suggestion I would glad to discuss this issue. I’m looking forward to hearing form you soon.
SRC response: Currently, there is a water fountain in that area. It is located on the wall by the pool exit across from Sparky’s Yard.
As for the cost of installation of an additional water fountain, it would be substantially higher than your figures. A quality Outdoor drinking fountain would range between $2,000 and $5,000. It would depend on the type. There are stainless steel fountains and there are concrete fountains. In either case, we would have to get one that would be “vandalism proof”. Some individuals do not always treat equipment with respect and cause damages to equipment.
Secondly, the location of installation would also have an impact on cost. It would have to be a location where the water source is drinkable. Many locations do not have potable water. After it is located there would be saw cutting into concrete and additional plumbing required and concrete installed in the location with footers that would support the drinking fountain. Then the fountain would be installed.
All the installation above would come after we had an engineer design the scope and requirements of the project and that would cost at least $500.
Finally, the expansion of the SRC may extend over the east court area. Therefore, possibly removing the outdoor weight room, tennis courts, basketball courts, and multi court. However, if the expansion is built on the North Side of campus, as a satellite stand alone facility, I think we can push to have some renovations performed on the outdoor courts to the east of the SRC, which could include the installation of a water fountain in the area that you are speaking of.
Until then, please feel free to use the current water fountain by Sparky’s Yard.
Thanks for your great feedback. Unfortunately, at this time we cannot do what you suggested.
Patron Suggestion 12/07/2010: I have been participating in the SDMB program for about a year and a half. I am aware of there being scheduling issues and various other things that do not allow classes or instructors to teach at certain times. However, I was wondering if there was any way possible to add a pilates class to the winter break schedule? No need to contact me, just giving feedback.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. Our schedule for the winter break (and every other semester) is highly dependent on instructor availability. Unfortunately, none of the Pilates instructors were able to teach at a time that the gym/space was available over winter, or requested that they receive a break over the winter session. We are currently working on hiring more Pilates instructors to be able to offer more classes.
Patron Suggestion 10/25/2010: Not professional with customers. Was able to get in without ID. It is ridiculous.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. We are certainly sorry you had an unsatisfactory experience. We work very hard to ensure our staff treats customers with respect and professionalism. This will be addressed with our staff.
Patron Suggestion 10/14/2010: Will there be any zumba-thon like events with guest instructors this semester?
Keep up the great work with the SDF classes!
SRC response: Thanks for your feedback! There are a number of upcoming events with Zumba this semester. On Friday, October 29th from 9-11 pm we will be hosting MU After Dark and having a Halloween Zumba Costume Party on Hayden Lawn. This event is FREE and we encourage everyone and anyone to attend. We will also be having a Zumba Master Class with Zumba Education Specialist Vanessa Lupercio on Friday, November 5. Pricing and location are TBD, so please continue checking the website for updates.
Hope to see you there!
Patron Suggestion 10/14/2010: The music is too loud
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback.
We are currently working on a system to create a diverse style of music to play in the SRC. We have also set our volumes to a max number. It is set at a desirable volume for listening or not (if you have your own music and headphones).
We cannot control the volume songs are recorded at. Sometimes the volume is different, but we will NOT turn the music up for a softer song.
Patron Suggestion 10/12/2010: immediately create a temporary gender-neutral space for folks to change
No need to contact me, just giving feedback.
SRC response: Unfortunately, we do not have the space to make this request a reality. We have had this request once, many years ago. It was encouraged at that time that the individual use a bathroom stall to change. The ADA stalls have a larger space for comfort.
Patron Suggestion 10/05/2010: Do you have any plans to acquire the stepping machines that look like mini-escalators in the near future? Those provide a phenomenal workout and would be a great addition to the cardio choices currently available. They are FAR more effective than the traditional "stepper" machines.
Thank you!
SRC response: We are not purchasing any cardio equipment for the SRC at this time. The next time we purchase equipment will probably be when we build the expansion. Many people like the piece of equipment you are speaking of. However, when we established the lease program we are currently contracted with, we did not see a piece of equipment that could keep up with the use demand that we experience here at the SRC. However, we will keep this thought in mind as we move forward with the expansion.
Thanks for the comment. Have a great day
Patron Suggestion 9/29/2010: The music is horrible. Why are you playing soft Jazz very loudly. Last week it was shitty banjo music. There needs to be better music policy so that the music is not disruptive to people listening to their iPods. Change this
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. As we try to accommodate the needs of our patrons, our music is designed to be background music. We have done surveys and asked patrons for their suggestions several times. However, even with a rotation, we are not always able to satisfy everyone.
Headphones are available for sale the Pro Shop and can be plugged into our cardio equipment which has both TV and music capabilities if you would like to select a different genre of music than what is playing overhead.
We are working on creating a music playlist that provides a variety of music styles. We hope to have that up and running soon.
Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 9/23/2010: Why are the basketball gyms painted two shades of blue and not maroonand gold? I feel like I'm at The University of North Carolina when I'min there. The new floors were a good start but this needs to bechanged. No need to contact me, just giving feedback.
SRC response: I could not agree with you more. In fact, the actual name of the MaroonGym is The Red Gym. Can you believe that Red and Blue Gym. Those arecolors of our rival University. Therefore, when I got here in 2000 Iinformally changed the name of the Red Gym to the Maroon Gym and triedto put more maroon in it. Being from NC State, I do not like theCarolina Blue either. We priced out painting of the Blue Gym to Gold, for ASU colors, and it was over $15K. Therefore, we could not repaint. But, we may repaint the gyms with renovation money that is coming withthe expansion. I hope we can do it. Thanks for the comment.
Patron Suggestion 9/23/2010: I am writing to say that, on the whole, I like the SRC very much. Thenew floors look great, and the staff is pleasant and accommodating. The only problem that I have with the gym is the music. While thestudent who work there are nice, they do not seem to have a very goodsense of what music is appropriate for a gym. Today, smooth jazz wasplaying very loudly at 7:10 in the morning. A week ago, it washillbilly banjo music. I understand that you had problems withcomplaints about swearing because of certain pandora stations, but arethere no restrictions to the type of music that are played? LAFitness and other gyms have worked out that playing energizing, modernmusic softly works nicely for those people who don't want to useheadphones. For those that do want to use headphones, this music isnot disruptive. There are certain types of music that should not beplayed in a gym, though, because they are not condusive of workingout. The music policy at other gyms is designed to annoy the fewestpeople, and I think this is a good policy for a facility catering tohundreds or thousands of people in a week.
My intent is not to be an annoying customer complaining about thelittle things, but I find the music at the SRC disruptive to myworkout every second or third day. If it were just once or twice amonth, I'd be more than happy with the music overall, but this is farfrom the case. Clearly it is difficult/impossible to establish amusic policy that will be enjoyed by all SRC-goers. I understandthat. But the current policy of changing the music every 15 minutes, having no restrictions on the type of music that can be played, and(seemingly) no limits to how loudly it should be played willeventually be disruptive to everyone's workouts, given enough time.It is possible that my description of the music is not a goodrepresentation of the current policy, but this is what comes out ofthe speakers every day.
Certainly you are a busy person, so I do not expect a reply back tothis email. I also presume that you have established the currentmusic policies based on feedback from SRC members, so I thought that Iwould voice my opinion. Thank you for the work you do making the SRCa nice place to work out. The choice of machines and weights, availability of water, and staff are great features of this facility.
SRC response: Thank you for your email. I do receive feedback going both ways onmusic. I agree that it is difficult to find a happy medium on music. Mychallenge with radio stations has been that songs are not set at thesame volume level and when we play a station we go from a really softsong to a really loud song. We also try to be aware of classes going onand the surrounding volume not affecting them. We try to set the musicas background music, not motivational music. Currently we are working on creating a music playlist that is bothcensored and appropriate for a fitness facility. It is taking time tocreate this playlist. I hope to have it up and running next week.
Patron Suggestion 9/21/2010: Please have the SDF instructors end classes on time. It really is not fair to receive only 35 mins of cycle 45 because the previous instructor couldn't end or start on time and the cycle instructor is courteous and respect the classes following. This has been an issue since semester started.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. This information has been relayed to the instructors to respect the classes following them. The expectation is to always end class a couple minutes early to allow the next class to begin on time, so this should not be an issue in the future.
Patron Suggestion 9/15/2010: Please consider this to be one vote for increasing the amount of lyricless trans/e-music and creasing the poppy top 40 stuff.
I find the higher beats/minute of e-music to be naturally invigorating, whereas the top 40 stuff is an emotional rollercoaster, from depressing to sickening..
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback and letting us know your feedback on the style of music we play at the SRC. We aim to satisfy our customers and create a positive environment. We are in the midst of creating a playlist that plays different genres of music. We do our best to play different styles.
Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 9/14/2010: Connect the security feed the watches the basketball courts to a website so people that want to play hoops can see if there are people playing without having to drive down.
SRC response: The cameras are designed to watch the doors of the large gyms in order to eliminate those that enter illegally. In addition, the system is set-up on a university wide security system that would prevent us from offering this service. You could call the following phone numbers 480-965-8900 to inquire about the schedule of use.
Patron Suggestion 8/31/2010: the electric socket in the ladies locker room doesn’t work. This is the second one in from the pool side on the mirror
SRC response: I have submitted a request with Facilities management to have the outlet repaired. This will likely be fixed within the next few days. Thank you for letting us know.
Patron Suggestion 8/31/2010: We are paying money to rent sqaush racquets...but they need maintanance. They need to be regripped...Due to very worn out grips, it slips out ofthehand while playing and creates danger to other player or self.
SRC response: Thank you for submitting the comment card below. We have re-gripped twosquash racquets that had worn out grips
Patron Suggestion 8/24/2010: At another college I attended they had canoes, kayaks, cross-country skis, etc, that could be rented from the school. Does ASU have anything like that (I realize the skis would be unnecessary)?”
SRC response: In the past, the SRC used to have an outdoor recreation department. However, due to budget constraints, this program ended in 2007. As of right now, we do not have anything like this in our future plans. However, if this is something you would like to see in the SRC Expansion project, please feel free to submit your idea here:
http://src.asu.edu/Grow/Suggestion
Patron Suggestion 7/29/2010: Please, Please look for ways to cut down on the amount of toxic fumes we will have to inhale during and after this carpeting project. Request the doors be left open to outside in the aerobics classes and air filters, plants???
SRC response: We have asked the contractor to reduce the smell as much as possible. The major smell will be associated to the Weight Room and Circuit Training Room. Thankfully, those rooms can be closed at the entrance doors. The hallway should not be that bad because they do not have to use a strong smelling glue to put the floor tiles down. However, we encourage users to be very aware of their body while working out these next few weeks. We do not need to close the facility for the work. However, each person reacts differently to the environments. Therefore, if you feel you are getting sick, light headed or nauseas, please discontinue your workout.
Patron Suggestion 7/29/2010: Volleyball nets on the racquetball courts? Perhaps 1 of them? Thanks
SRC response: We will have a walleyball net up on court 11 beginning week of August 9. Thanks for the comment.
Patron Suggestion 7/29/2010: Just wanted to comment about the leaky water dispensers, it's really messy and could be a potential slip hazard. Perhaps water cooler dispensers like the big blue ones would work better. I am sure cost is a factor, but it would be less messy and safer. Thanks!
SRC response: We are in the process of researching a method of replacing water spickets on the coolers. If this cannot be done, we will be replacing the coolers. In the meantime, towels are to be placed under the “slightly” leaking ones and those that are leaking more than “slightly” will be taken off the floor.
Thanks for the comment.
Patron Suggestion 7/28/2010: One of the campus phones in the phone bank on the 1st floor has been out of order for a long time. Can you contact Telephone Services to have it repaired?
SRC response: The request has been sent for repair. Thanks for the feedback.
Patron Suggestion 7/28/2010: The facility should open earlier on weekends some people still like to get an EARLY morning workout in before their weekend routine.
And I think you should have spin cycle classes.
SRC response: Unfortunately, based on budget restraints, we cannot open earlier on weekends. We research the use patterns of the SRC. Then base our operational hours on what hours would be best to accommodate larger use patterns, while since keeping ourselves within our student employee personnel budget.
Also, we do provide spin classes. They are in Small Gym D.
http://src.asu.edu/SDF/ClassSchedule
Patron Suggestion 7/21/2010: While the weight room is closed, why not open Sparky's Yard? I have always wanted to try it, especially after swimming and have yet to see it open.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback! We understand that opening Sparky's yardwhile the Weight Room is closed would provide our participants withcontinued access to strength equipment. The issue with opening Sparky'syard this time of year is the danger of exercising in extreme heat.Exercising in temperatures in excess of 100 degree can lead to heatcramp, heat exhaustion, and potentially fatal heat stroke. We plan onopening Sparky's yard when the temperature cool down, but at this timeof year, it is too dangerous.
Patron Suggestion 7/19/2010: It's been very hot upstairs. Is there any way to turn up the air? Other than that, it's great! I love the SRC!
SRC Response: We have sent a work request to Universities Facilities Management to look at the air temperature in the SRC. We do have a variance that allows us to keep the building cooler than most facilities on campus. However, during monsoon season, the humidity impacts how comfortable the SRC is dramatically. The temperature controls cannot keep up with the humidity because they work off temperatures. Once people become active in the building, then the temperature sensors will react to the temperature change, thus start circulating the air.
Thanks for the comment.
Patron Suggestion 7/16/2010: Have a gymnastics class for adults. I can't find one anywhere and I'd really like to do a bit of recreational gymnastics.
SRC Response: Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, we do not have the appropriate facility to offer a safe, all levels gymnastics class. There is quite a bit of risk involved with gymnastics as well so without a proper facility we would not want to take on this risk. The Matrix Parkour Instructional program does a minimal amount of tumbling, but aside from that we would not be able to offer this sort of program.
Patron Suggestion 6/30/2010: You should really stay open an extra hour on weekdays! We just don't have enough time to teach, eat, then work out. Thanks!
SRC response: Although we would love to add operational hours, from a financial situation, we cannot add operating hours.
Patron Suggestion 6/30/2010: One of the campus phones in the phone bank on the 1st floor has been out of order for a long time. Can you contact Telephone Services to have it repaired?
SRC response: Thanks for the comment/information. I will process the repair.
Patron comment 6/18/2010: I have submitted multiple comments about the inappropriate language that I over hear when coming into the SRC and nothing has seemed to improve. Do these comments not mean anything to anyone? If not you shouldn't have an online suggestion form. I am appalled by the language I hear when I walk into the SRC and when I leave. I understand your staff are college students but I do not understand how you allow your staff to cuss (loudly) and have inappropriate conversations across the desk as they are checking people in at the front of your building. I paid to have a membership here instead of going somewhere else but I will be rethinking my membership at the end of the summer. This is just ridiculous.
SRC Response: Thank you for the feedback you have provided. We are sorry to hear this has been your experience. We definitely train our students in professionalism and proper verbal/nonverbal communication. Without specific day/time of the incident, it is hard to hold the appropriate people responsible. If you are comfortable, please contact me directly at stefi@asu.edu or 480.965.8909 and I can better hold the individual(s) responsible.
I appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback. Every feedback is acknowledged. We take feedback both positive and constructive very seriously.
Patron Suggestion 6/11/2010: Some chairs by the swimming pool that are in the shaded area had notbeenclean in weeks, they are full with birds stuff all over. I just worryforlittle kids that are trying to put their towels on those duty chairs. No need to contact me, just giving feedback.
SRC response: The chairs were recently cleaned. Unfortunately, the birds love the thick tree. We will stay on top of the cleaning.
Patron Suggestion: 1. One of the rowing machines needs a new battery for the display. 2. The other rowing machine needs servicing, it is a little rough, perhaps a ball bearing or lubricant is missing.
SRC response: The first rower had a battery replaced and is now in working condition. The second rower was inspected, lubricated, and had a part replaced. It is in better working condition now.
Please let us know of any further facility issues you come across, they are always helpful!
Patron Suggestion 5/20/2010:I come to the SRC to workout Monday-Friday and everyday as I enter the building the front desk staff never acknowledge my existence. There is no friendly greeting...not even a hello. They are always involved in their own conversation with other staff. These conversations aren't appropriate and for the 30 seconds it takes to get checked in all I hear are swear words and how wasted they got the night before. I realize this is a student facility but at the very least a 'hello' and have a good day would be appreciated. No need to contact me, just giving feedback.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear this was the experience you received. We work hard to educate our team on proper etiquette when dealing with customers. They should be giving customers their full attention. We will work to make this a better experience for you in the future.
Patron Suggestion 5/18/2010: Once the floor is finished please have floors swept 3 x 4 times day.Otherwise, dirt gets into cracks - separates floor boards and gets (stuck) from dirt in groves.
SRC response: We do not have staffing that can cover this request. The courts get swept at least once a day Monday – Friday. We machine scrub the floors once a week.
Patron Suggestion 5/11/2010: SDF finals week is so weak..no hard cardio classes like basic training, jumpand pump, kickboxing or step warriors included! i paid for whole semester, and I am not happy about this weak and limited offers during finals, likemany other students who paid for a whole semester.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. The biggest problem with scheduling forFinals Week is the availability of the instructors. Since all of ourinstructors are students, their schedules change during this week due topapers, tests, and other commitments. Additionally, many instructorsleave for the summer during the week and are not available to teach.Due to this it is often difficult to schedule as many different stylesof classes as we do for the regular semester. The semester pass is basically for the regular academic semester. Finals week has always been a "free" week as a reward for SRC members. We included the Interim into the membership as a courtesy to the regularparticipants in the program (so they would not have to purchase a summerpass to attend in the event they were not present during the summer). We try our best to accommodate as many participant requests as possible.Unfortunately, it is very difficult to please all participants and meettheir likes/dislikes.
Patron Suggestion 5/7/2010: Need a Sauna ASAP esp. w/ the newly approved SRC fee. Also, everytime I walk past the girls locker room there is a FOWL odor. Please clean.
SRC response: We will keep the Sauna concept in mind as we work with the Student Advisory group in the expansion planning. Also, we have passed your cleanliness concern onto ASU Facilities Management. We hope to have day staff stop by around 4pm each day to spot clean, since our custodians clock out at noon.
Patron Suggestion 4/6/2010: I see that last year a question was asked about fees charged to students, and you replied with the fees will slowly go up- $10 in 2009, $20 in2010,etc. These fees are meant to match the building that was going on duringthat time. However, now that it is 2010, are you still planning on this incramental fee program, or striclty charging $30 each semester?
SRC response: Thank you for your question regarding the expansion. Yes the student service facility fee proposal that was just passed by the Arizona Boardof Regents was $150.00 per year per student to develop facilities on Polytechnic, West and Downtown Campuses in areas of health, recreationand community and to expand the Student Recreation Complex on Tempe Campus. There will be no incremental fee.
Patron Suggestion 4/6/2010: Please please please bring back the fans on thes econdfloor balcony area. They really helped and are missed by all.
SRC response: Thank you for your comment. SRC management moved the fans from the firstand second floors on 4/5/10 to the weight room. The weight room wasoverheated, and the air handler was not operating. We used the fansthroughout the afternoon and evening (when the SRC is at its peak usage)to alleviate the effects of the stagnant air. The fans were returned to their normal locations this afternoon afterthe air was turned back to proper levels in the weight room.
Patron Suggestion 3/30/2010: Thank you for providing a comfortable pool-water temperature early yesterday morning. I didn't know what to expect after there had been several hours of steady rain. This morning was very nice as well. I appreciate the way that you have dealt with all the weather changes.
SRC response: Thanks for the positive feedback. I will pass it on to the staff. Have a great day.
Patron Suggestion 3/30/2010: Red gym usage for Volleyball Club is not efficient use of space. 62 people in blue gum - 12 people on one court in red gym. Put club back in green gym or force them to allow other recd court for basketball. Maximize gym usage!!! Have club go to PE West... maybe.
SRC response: Unfortunately, we have to balance both services and programs here at the SRC. I would love to dedicate more open recreation time for those that play basketball. However, last semester we had 3 Volleyball team practicing at one time in the Green Gym. That was not safe. Therefore we had to move the schedules around. With the Maroon Gym I tried to have them finish early enough to not impact the open recreation basketball too much. We already have club sports in the Green Gym, as well as, other informal recreation opportunities scheduled in there. PE West is not an option because it is not supervised for open recreation. PE West is only opened for Programs. It is a good thing we do have PE West for programs. If we did not, they would be in the SRC and there would be very little open recreation time.
The good news is that the facility fee was approved this year and an expansion is in the future. How soon, we do not know. The expansion is imperative to the operations of Campus Recreation. The use of the building continues to increase while the space becomes limited.
I would suggest using the outdoor basketball courts located on the East side of the East Tennis Courts.
Patron Suggestion 3/30/2010: Need a sauna ASAP esp w/ the newly approved SRC fee. Also, every time I walk past the girls locker room there is a FOWL odor. Please clean
SRC response: We have not worked out the details of the SRC expansion. There is a student group that is going to work with the University Administration to facilitate the design so that it meets the general needs of the ASU Student. Regarding the cleanliness of the Women’s Locker Room we are working with Facilities Management to try and get it clean 2x per day. Currently, it is cleaned once per day. We hope to have some resolve soon.
Thanks
Patron Suggestion 3/30/2010: Just how many basketball courts are currently at the SRC? The only two that I have knowledge of and that I have played in are the ones in the Blue and Maroon/Red gyms. Are there others at the facility(besides outside courts) that are available for use. The only reason I ask is that, sometimes, a lot of us just want to shoot around or practice shooting while a bunch of others want to run 4-on-4 or 5-on-5. Then, they start their games, and we have to wait until they are done to do our thing again. Most of the time, people just keep filing in after the first, and the rest of us don't get to do anything if we don't feel like joining an actual game on that day or at that time. If there are other indoor courts, where are they located? If those are the only two, is there a way that they could be divided up somehow so that the "gamers" could play on one/some court(s) and the "free-stylers" on the other(s)?
SRC response: In the SRC, we have 2 courts in the Maroon Gym, 2 courts in the Blue Gym. The SRC is open and supervised 6am-11pm M-F and 9am-9pm on Sa & Su. The exception to these hours would be break and holiday times. Please refer to our web site for the exceptions.
There are other indoor courts on campus in the PE West and East facilities. However, those facilities are only opened and supervised when we have programs that use the space. The use of these facilities allows us to keep the SRC courts open for Open Recreation.
With the demand of basketball for games, it is not possible to set a court aside shoot arounds. I would encourage you to visit the SRC during a lower use time, such as 4pm. In addition, with the understanding of the need for court space, we made the decision to put outdoor basketball court on the tennis courts.
The good news is that the facility fee was approved this year and an expansion is in the future. How so, we do not know. The expansion is imperative to the operations of Campus Recreation. The use of the building continues to increase while the space becomes limited.
Since the SRC is the primary open recreation facility, we ask that all users cooperate in using space
Patron Suggestion 3/16/2010: Because of the traffic of a gym, in particular this one, I think the locker rooms need to be cleaned more than just once a day. In particular, the women’s locker room (especially the locker #200’s area) is covered in a carpet of hair, used Q-Tips, and band-aids and so are the showers. It is quite frankly disgusting, as well as a health hazard. Please consider having the cleaners come in and clean at least by mid-day. Thank you for your consideration. Please note that it is only 11:00am and already the floors are covered in dirt and hair.
SRC response: Thanks for the comment. We have shared your comment with ASU Facilities Management. That is the department that is responsible for cleaning the SRC. Up until recently, they did not have staff on campus in the afternoons. However, they have recently hired some day-staff that will go throughout many of the campus buildings and conduct spot cleaning. They do not perform a thorough cleaning. Our challenge is cleaning the women’s locker room. The two staff members they have hired are both males. To conduct cleaning in the women’s locker room, we would need to close it down. This is the current challenge we are facing. We hope to have arrangements made in the next 2 weeks.
Thanks again for the comment. Enjoy your day.
Patron Suggestion 3/16/2010: Quite a lot of times, people use the racquetball courts for dancing, running and stuff. I understand that it is an open recreation center, but stuff like that limits the whole purpose for which these courts are created. As we cannot play racquetball in there. Please consider the purpose involved here and take this suggestion.
SRC response: The racquetball courts are used for a variety of activities do to the limited space we have in the SRC. However, the primary purpose of the courts is racquetball. Therefore, if there are no courts available for racquetball, and a court is being used for a purpose other than racquetball, the court must be made available for racquetball. We request that the users communicate and the other activity conclude within 10-15 minutes.
We hope that we are able to expand the SRC in the future. The expansion will provide the opportunity to build more small multipurpose gymnasiums.
Thanks for the comment.
Patron Suggestion 3/10/2010: Please move posters advertising "no cells in locker rooms" policy. Putting them at the entrance might help people remember. I crave some peace and privacy. People's longer phone conversations could go outside.
SRC response: We will look into good locations for the no cell phone use in the locker rooms signage.
Patron Suggestion 3/5/2010: The number of “out of service”/non operating pieces of equipment in the east “circuit” room is not acceptable. Students are assessed fees for going to the SRC and they must pay for them. These fees do not cover salaries. The enrollment is up and therefore, the income for fees must be also – why are there not more updated, fixed and reliable pieces of equipment?
SRC response: Sorry there was a short period that we have an increased number of pieces of equipment down. We had a shortened staff for a period in January. Unfortunately, during that time, we experienced several broken pieces of equipment. Rather that contract out the repairs, I tried to wait it out until our maintenance tech returned. Doing so, saved money.
Regarding the fees that the students pay, those fees primarily go to retire to debt of the building construction. In addition, some of it goes to support the other three campus recreation programs. Little of the fee that is assessed goes into “operational cost”. We do receive funding for the University to operate. That funding does not cover everything we need to do. We have many purchases and maintenance project/repairs that are deferred year to year. We need to make decisions what purchases are priorities. We have made every attempt possible to stay up with current trends in the cardio and strength field.
I have walked the facility several times in the past week and although we have a few pieces that we are waiting for repairs, I feel comfortable that we are doing a good job now keeping up. Once again, I apologize for that short period in January that we did not keep up as we should have.
Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments.

Patron Suggestion 2/17/2010: The outdoor gym spark's yard needs a water jugg with ice. Is there any way we could get a water jug outside for Sparky's Yard?
SRC response: We are currently working on this and should have a water jug in Sparky's Yard beginning Monday, February 22nd.
Patron Suggestion 2/5/2010: SDF and SDMB is free during first week for us to try. Shape up sounds good, but wanna see before buying it, if its worth, how are
the trainers, if our style of training fit. Is it possible to offer first week sessions of Shape Up free so we can try and decide. MWF 5-6:15 session seems a good time. Thank you
SRC response: SDF and SDMB are free because they are membership based, not program based, so we do not have maximum enrollment numbers. Additionally, we have a maximum enrollment for Shape Up so if we did free week it would not give an appropriate example of the class (trainers develop program based on the number of participants). Finally, we usually meet maximum enrollment in Shape Up programs well in advance - if we offered first week free we would not even necessarily have the space in the group to sign up.
Patron Suggestion 2/4/2010: Please update the SDF instructor page!
SRC response: I will update bio the page today.
Patron Suggestion 1/27/2010: Since the notion that man-made global warming/man-made climate change hasbeen established as a hoax now that the emails from East Anglia Universityhave been leaked, there is little need to push making the campus or any partof it more "green". My "green idea" is to drop this green crap entirely,UNLESS it would actually save some green (save some money in case thatphrase has been lost).
SRC response: Thanks for the comment. However, I cannot disagree with you more. Even ifthere is possibly no man-made global warming may exist, there are still manyother objectives that pertain to the green idea. Being responsible humanscan decrease the amount of waste that is in landfills. Decreasing the useof plastic bottles and plastic bags is an example. The use of solar energywill help save money for companies and residential owners. The use of windgenerated energy will also save money. Purchasing organic food not onlysave chemical from getting into the water systems but the food has a bettertaste. These are only quick thoughts. There are many more. Please do notlook at being green only as being applied to global warming.
Patron Suggestion 1/06/2010: Why in the projected SRC expansion is there no indication of any plans for improvement of the swimming opportunities on campus? In hot weather (which is most of the year), lanes in the SRC pool are very crowded at peak times.
The pool closes too early on Sundays, and the west pool is not accessible to individual swimmers. More money should be allocated to hire additional lifeguards to keep all three pools open and to maintain the pool -- especially to have the locker rooms cleaned on the weekends. By closing time on Sunday afternoon, the shower rooms and bathrooms have become completely unsanitary.
SRC response: Regarding the pool closing on Sundays, about five years ago we made a decision to close the pool early on Sundays to allow time for the lifeguard staff to vacuum the pool. The fact that the SRC is open over 100 hours per week allows little time for general cleaning of the pool which take several hours to complete. Unfortunately vacuuming the pool while swimmers are in the water is not an option, since the vacuum has an electric powered motor. Based on usage numbers over several years Sunday night became the most logical time to close the pool early. This has kept our staff from working until late hours of the night and has allowed us to keep the pool as clean as possible.
We agree that there are times when the pool lanes become crowded and the option of the additional lanes in the west area of the pool would be nice to open to other swimmers. Based on the amount of lifeguards scheduled during the day we are unable to open the west pool. During most of the day only two guards are on duty. One is up in the chair while the other is on break and completing maintenance duties assigned to each shift. One lifeguard does not have the ability to effectively cover the entire pool in a safe manner. If additional funding is provided, and it meets the needs of increasing the pool staff, we will consider putting another lifeguard on during the day.
Regarding the sanitary conditions of the locker room at the SRC, we have communicated the concern with ASU Facilities Management. They oversee the janitorial staff and make decisions regarding the days and hours of the week the staff is assigned to work.
Thanks for the feedback
Patron Suggestion 1/05/2010: It would be an asset to the SRC to have a music request form for genres of music due to the fact that people have different opinions to motivational qualities of music. this would be beneficial for the patrons without MP3/iPods.
Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 1/05/2010: Sometimes the loud speaker is so loud during the last closing announcements (1 hr, 30 min and 15 min before closing) in the circuit training room that it hurts my ears! It's fine elsewhere, just in that room something is wrong with the volume. Have an employee stand in there when the announcement is made one night and you can easily find out where the volume should be.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback regarding the radio in the Student Recreation Complex.
We try to be aware of the volume throughout the facility. We will certainly work to make sure that both the radio and the announcements are kept at a respectable level.
Patron Suggestion 12/30/2009: I always rent out equipment from around this time. I am just very grateful to be attended by such great staff. Thanks for all your hard work!!
SRC response: Thanks! We aim to please.
Patron Suggestion 12/14/2009: The music choice here is terrible, should play more upbeat popular music to workout to.
SRC response: We try to play a diverse selection of music. We rotate stations to provide an assortment for our participants.
If someone is displeased with the current selection playing, please let the Facility Manager on duty and they can change the channel.
Patron Suggestion 12/09/2009: Could you guys buy another table tennis nets? Because there is one table missing net
SRC response: We have taken a look at the situation with the nets and have replaced any old or tattered nets through out the building.
If you have any further suggestions or comments, please feel free to contact me or fill out another card at your earliest convenience.
Patron Suggestion 12/09/2009: Im concerned w/ the idea of expanding this facility when realistically, ASU can even maintain in operating conditions all the equipment that should be working. Instead of thinking in expanding (more building?) think on putting a side a budget that would allow replacement of upholstery on the benches that are tore and machines that don’t operate properly . Every piece of furniture on the 1st floor is so dirty you hesitate to seat on them
SRC response: In regards to the upholstery issue on the strength machines; the SRC relies on trained student staff seamstresses to maintain the upholstery of the strength equipment. Unfortunately, this semester we have had a difficult time finding someone to fill this position and so the process has been slow in repairing the equipment in a timely manner and I apologize for this. We recently went through and replaced the upholstery on over 10 machines between the weight room and circuit training room, and will continue through the holiday break in maintaining any others until we hire a new seamstress.
The furniture on the 1st and second floor are maintained (shampoo cleaned) once a semester by the custodial staff. Due to the large load of daily tasks they have to do, they normally cannot schedule time to handle the seats more frequently.
Please keep in mind that Should the SRC expansion go through, this would also include updates in this facility. Which could include new strength equipment and possibly new leisure furniture.
If you have any further questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me or fill out another comment card.
Patron Suggestion 11/23/2009: Why Kathy is not teaching yoga or pilates for the last couple weeks? Is it temporary or permanent for the rest of the semester?
SRC response: Kathy has been in Europe with her husband the past few weeks celebrating their anniversary! She will be back next week to resume her normal teaching schedule.
Patron Suggestion 11/05/2009: I think the employees should eb able to wear hats because sometimes their hair looks gnarly.
SRC response: Thanks for your feedback. We only allow hats for positions that may need it for protection from the sun (i.e. Field Maintenance working outside) and as long as it does not obscure their view. Otherwise we like to present a professional appearance with the appropriate uniform of staff shirt, appropriate bottoms and close-toed shoes.
Patron Suggestion 10/27/2009: Rap music-nonstop-on the outdoor PA system during water polo? Why? Its unusual to pipe music over the sporting event. My 2 cents!!
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback regarding the radio in the Student Recreation Complex. We try to be aware of the volume during business hours, especially during an event. The volume is located inside the building so we rely on the lifeguards to help assist with an appropriate volume setting. We certainly try to have the highest level of customer service.
Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 10/27/2009: TKO classes vary much, have teachers push us more, and be prepared with good and variety of drills. Some classes are too easy!
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. This information has been passed on to the TKO instructors and they will continue working to provide quality workouts for participants. We will continue with workshops and mentorship to increase the intensity of the classes!
Patron Suggestion 10/23/2009: It would be very much appreciated if the TV in the lobby would be fixed
SRC response: Thank you for completing a comment card. The big screen TV in the SRC has a burnt lamp. A new one is ordered and is awaiting shipment and install. This will be completed soon.
Patron Suggestion 10/23/2009: Please clean the women showers and drains daily! Today, it is absolutely clogged and unsanitary
SRC response: Thank you for filling out a comment card. Regarding the women’s shower area, the floors in the showers are cleaned daily. They are power washed and the floors scrubbed by the in house custodial staff. Unfortunately, the custodial staff is not trained nor are they permitted to clean or unclog any floor drains in the SRC. Therefore, clearing drains is not a daily service that we can provide. Any time a floor drain is clogged, a work request is submitted to Facilities Management and then a plumber can be sent to snake the drains to clear the issue. This happens on a regular basis, however, it can only be completed when an issue is present.
Please let us know of any further issues. Please let the Facility Manager at the SRC know of issues similar to this, so that I can submit work requests in a more timely manner.
Patron Suggestion 10/20/2009: PLEASE PLEASE FIX THE TV IN THE LOBBY!!!! I ALWAYS COME TO THE SRC TO WORK OUT, I LOVE TO WATCH ESPN AND GAMES BEFORE MY WORKOUT. SO PLEASE PLEASE FIX THE TV.
SRC response: Thank you for completing a suggestion form. We have ordered a replacement lamp for this TV which should be replaced soon. Please note that there are TVs on the cardio machines that can be used to watch ESPN and other shows and programming during your work out at the SRC. Thank you for your patience as we repair the issue.
Patron Suggestion 10/20/2009: good music tonight
SRC response: Thank you. We aim to please!
Patron Suggestion 10/13/2009: Getting Luna bars after classes is awesome! Thanks :D
SRC response: Thank you! The Luna Bar sponsorship is something new for the semester. We will be handing them out through the end of the month.
Patron Suggestion 10/06/2009: There is terrible lifting music in the weight room. It’s actually not lifting music, It’s practically the opposite of lifting music. Not all of us have iPods to listen to. Avril Lavine? Taylor Swift? Beyonce? Come on now. You did a survey pretty recently…you can’t lift in a group well with headphones in. Rap is fine! Rock is fine!
SRC response: Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on the music playing. We try to play a diverse selection of music. We rotate stations to provide an assortment for our participants.
If you are displeased with the current selection playing, please let the Facility Manager on duty and they can change the channel.
Patron Suggestion 10/06/2009: Get some New Basketballs that are NOT flat
SRC response: Thank you for filling out a comment card at the SRC.
Regarding the issue about flat basketballs. We are constantly replacing old basketballs with new ones as they are found to be worn down. This semester alone we have replaced 7 basketballs. The basketballs in this facility are the most overused and therefore, get worn down the most. If a ball is flat, please ask the equipment room staff to have it pumped for air. If you find a ball to be flat because of a hole, please inform the equipment room staff of this so it can be taken out of rotation and a new ball will replace it.
Please let me know if you have any further questions about this or any other issue at the SRC.
Patron Suggestion 9/29/2009: I recommend giving your employees food and beverages while they work. Then they can have lots of energy.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. We believe that a balanced nutritional diet is important. We encourage our staff to eat healthy and to schedule themselves in a way that allows them to eat throughout the day. We also provide a break room for our staff to eat or rest in, as needed.
Patron Suggestion 9/29/2009: We had a great time tonight (9/17). Your staff, once clocked in, was attentive, quick and helpful. Thanks.
1) Great facility! 2) Friendly, helpful staff. 3) Thank you for the last minute conference room usage. 4) Coraline was a great help!
The staff was so helpful with our event for the Army. The went above and beyond to help us welcome back our soldiers.
Coraline was so extremely amazingly helpful to me. I was trying to get a locker assignment and kept getting lock combos that did not work. Coraline tried 3 lockers with me to no avail. She then obtained 6 more combos and we finally got a winner. Thank her for her caring and patience; she was GREATJ
SRC response: Thank you. We will pass on these kudos to our staff!
Patron Suggestion 9/29/2009: Pay raise for the entire student staff. They are the best people ever!
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. We agree we have the best team working in Campus Rec! We work within our budget to pay our staff the best rates possible. We continually review our budget to see what changes can be made. As pay increases are available, we will certainly make them.
Patron Suggestion 9/29/2009: I have requested for over a week for MORE clean rags in bins. With increased use, the quantity is insufficient and we are all requesting refills – bins empty 2 out of 3 times. We need them to clean the equipment after use.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback. We certainly try to provide a service of towels and solution to clean machinery. As there are a lot of people entering our facility, we try to keep rags available while others are being cleaned. If you notice a shortage, please alert our staff. Often they are in the process of coming out but we are not always able to put rags out immediately but we will certainly try.
Patron Suggestion 9/15/2009: I bike to campus, work out, then shower before I have to teach class. Today, when I got to the women’s locker room there was a pool of skuzzy used shower water 10ft x 5ft x 1inch deep right in front of my locker. I hope that the drains are cleaned well so this does not happen AGAIN! On the plus side, the staff was really nice when I mentioned the problem.
SRC response: Sorry for this inconvenience. Unfortunately, we do not know we, or if, the drain will clog. We hope that this will not occur again.
Patron Suggestion 9/14/2009: Please place small recycling bins/cans in the gyms and throughout the workout center. So many plastic bottles are thrown away because people are too lazy to walk them to a recycling unit! Thank you for being environmentally sound=)
SRC response: We have done this. Thanks for the comment.
Patron Suggestion 9/14/2009: The lights on the tennis courts are not in working condition. Please work on it.
SRC response: We have requested an estimate for bulb replacement. We hope to have repairs made soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Patron Suggestion 9/14/2009: Fix the lights on the tennis courts NOW!
SRC response: We have requested an estimate for bulb replacement. We hope to have repairs made soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Patron Suggestion 9/14/2009: Please fix the Northern side tennis court lights (outside ones). At least 10-15 players looking for courts and only two of them available inside SRC. Thank you.
SRC response: We have requested an estimate for bulb replacement. We hope to have repairs made soon. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Patron Suggestion 9/14/2009: Two weeks ago on Saturday evening just after sunset, the music in theSRC pool and tennis courts was the loudest I have ever heard there. Itwas truly painful to walk by the loudspeakers. I requested that themusic be made softer. The lifeguard who said he'd radio the front desklater said the music was now softer, but he didn't know how much. Ifelt sorry for any of the pool's neighbors, and thought about the recentarticle in the Arizona Republic about how the U of A and ASU try tocombat their party-school rankings. Blaring music outdoors doesn't seemto be the right thing for our university. Also, it's an odd experiencehearing the music playing in the pool area and in the tennis courts.Presumably both areas are playing the same songs, but the speakers inthe tennis courts seem to favor the singers' voices while the poolspeakers send out more of the instrumental tracks. Two days ago I decided to again try a Saturday evening swim, and it wasa complete pleasure. Many thanks to the FM or lifeguard who arrangedthe peaceful atmosphere. It was really nice to hear conversations, thesplashing water, and the sounds of the city.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback regarding the radio in the StudentRecreation Complex. We try to be aware of the volume during business hours. We appreciateyou communicating with the Lifeguards. The volume is located inside thebuilding so we rely on the lifeguards to help assist with an appropriatevolume setting. We certainly try to have the highest level of customer service. And wewant to be conscientious to the neighboring areas with our volume. Itwill be addressed. Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 9/03/2009: What is the purpose of playing music in the EMPTY tennis courts onApache next to the SRC? You have signs on the front doors of the SRCtalking about your commitment to energy conservation, but you arewasting a lot of energy on all those speakers out there.
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback regarding the radio in the StudentRecreation Complex. We are committed to conserving energy. We turn the radio up in themorning so our participants who are out using the facility can enjoy aswell. We keep the volume at an appropriate level to ensure those livingin the neighborhoods are not bothered. We try to have the highest level of customer service. Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 9/09/2009: Can you please hang up some plastic shower organizers over the shower heads in the women's restroom so there is a place to put your things while showering so you don't have to put them on the floor, and maybe some hooks or benches to put your towel on while showering!
SRC response: Regarding the plastic organizers, this is something that Campus Recreation does not supply. If it is something that you desire, I suggest storing it in your locker and transporting back and forth to the shower.
Regarding the hooks and benches, I believe that we presently have both in the drying bay. The drying bay is located between the shower bays. If this is not correct, I will make sure that they are in those areas.
Patron Suggestion 9/03/2009: I found that the radio choice was very unmotivational and lacked a certain kick I have come to expect out of gyms. Aug 27 3:40-4:45pm
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback regarding the radio in the Student Recreation Complex. We try to play a diverse selection of music. We rotate stations to provide an assortment for our participants. If you are displeased with the current selection playing, please let the Facility Manager on duty and they can change the channel. We certainly try to have the highest level of customer service. I also appreciate the feedback regarding our team’s conduct. It will be addressed.
Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 8/27/2009: Is it possible to offer "Group Tennis Instructional Classes" first week free? Like you do for fitness or yoga classes..to see if it the tennis
classes are a good fit for us, then we can decide to sign up or not. Thank you
SRC response: The group tennis classes are taught by a contracted instructor who is paid based on enrollment (not a student employee like the other classes
we offer). Therefore, we must establish the minimum enrollment in order for the class to occur. Because of this, we cannot offer the first week
free. If you enroll in one of the classes and feel that the level of the class is not right, you are able to switch to a different class that is a higher/lower level.
Thank you for your inquiry!
Patron Suggestion 8/27/2009: Why Tish no longer teaching at SDMB? She was one of the best :D
SRC response: We agree, Tish is a great instructor. Our SDMB instructors areindependent contractors which allows us to provide the best instructors.Unfortunately, Tish already held a position on campus with similar jobresponsibilities to our instructors. Given this and the parameters ofthe ASU independent contractor agreement, it prohibited her fromcontinuing at the SRC. If in the future, she were to leave her otherposition, we would love to have her back teaching for us.
Patron Suggestion 8/27/2009: As an ASU alumnus with a disability, I was curious if the SRC expansion will include expanding adaptive recreational opportunities for Sun Devils who have disabilities?
SRC response: Thank you for your expressed interest in the expansion of the SRC. We will definitely be addressing the needs of disabled participants when developing the program scope for the expansion. Currently we are researching an adaptive multi weight station to replace the one we recently had to salvage. Once the expansion is approved through the Board of Regents we will be getting a student driven committee together to develop the program scope. We will have representation from the Disabled Student Resources Dept. Again thank you for your input.
Patron Suggestion 8/27/2009: Please update the SDF instructor bios and pictures. I would like to see who the teachers are and their qualifications before going to the class.
SRC response: Thank you for your comments. The bios have been updated with all of our current instructors and their information. Their pictures will be up later this week.
Patron Suggestion 8/14/2009: The entire SRC has been way too hot all July long. I’ve come to the SRC all Spring long though May and June, and the temperature was fine, but this month it has been ridiculous. I’m working out at the same situation and running machines and I cannot stand the pressure the heat is having on my body.
SRC response: We had higher than normal temperature throughout the month of July. We continued to work with Facilities Management to control the air temperature as best as we could. They were very receptive and cooled the activity areas. In addition, we purchase several fans to assist with circulating air.
Patron Suggestion 8/14/2009: The Gym’s have been exceptionally hot in the past month. I understand budgets are tight, we pay a fee for the facilities and if it needs to be raised to cool the building off, please do! At least add fans to the Gym’s for air flow.
SRC response: We had higher than normal temperature throughout the month of July. We continued to work with Facilities Management to control the air temperature as best as we could. They were very receptive and cooled the activity areas. Placing fans in the Gym’s on the floor, could pose a safety hazard.
With regard to the fee paid for the building. The fee that students pay goes to retire the debt of the building. The fee does not go to pay the utilities. The utilities associated with the SRC are paid for through the budget of ASU Facilities Management.
Patron Suggestion 8/06/2009: Thanks for following us on Twitter! The Sun Devil Fit schedule has beenup on the website: http://src.asu.edu/SDF/Schedules . We have the flyerscomplete and will be on the racks later today!Hope to see you in class!
SRC response: I'm super stoked for the Fall group fitness schedule, especially Zumba. When will they be out? Twitter said it was Monday.
Patron Suggestion 7/29/2009: Please play different music. Hip Hop. The majority of the people that workout here are young college kids that like hip hop. Thanks!
SRC response: Thank you for your feedback regarding the radio in the Student Recreation Complex. We try to play a diverse selection of music. We rotate stations to provide an assortment for our participants. If you are displeased with the current selection playing, please let the Facility Manager on duty and they can change the channel. Thank you again for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 7/29/2009: Music station selection can’t please everyone, all of the time, but it would be great if for a gym occupied by 90% 27-and-under persons, the music station selected was not a 60s-70s-80s and did not play religious music about Jesus (since ASU is a diverse campus). The staff at the front desk should also have a little more tact so as not to whine and complain about patron comments after they are submitted.
Patron Suggestion 7/28/2009: Please play different music.
Patron Suggestion 7/27/2009: How about turning half the showers into a steam room? There are never more than 1 or 2 people showering at a time and a steam room would be very therapeutic.
SRC response: Unfortunately, due to the tough economic times, we are not going to invest in any expansion projects at this time. In addition, the operation of a steam room is costly with respects to adding staff needed. We would need to hire additional staff to perform maintenance on the rooms. These cost are not reasonable at this time.
Patron Suggestion 7/14/2009: Hey! I'm an up and coming transfer student that's looking forward to utilizing SRC facility this fall. I'd like to make a request reguarding
the Zumba classes. Could you try to schedual them sometime after 5:15pm on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I understand that they are schedualed to the convenience of the instructors but I have a class that ends at 5:00pm on those days, and I'd like to have enough time to walk from there to Zumba! Thank you so much for your consideration. See you in two months!=)
SRC response: Thank you for your suggestion! We are planning on offering a variety of times for Zumba classes throughout the week at many different times
(including after 5:15 pm) to accommodate all the different schedules of our participants! Looking forward to having you in class!
Patron Suggestion 6/16/2009: Music in the weight room was really not good. Loud/angry music straight for 40 minutes. Hard to de-stress with this yelling music. Please, switch it up. Thanks!
SRC response: We appreciate the feedback on the music in the facility. We are not able to censor each station. If there ends up being something that is offensive, too loud, etc., please let the Facility Manager know and they can make a change to the station.
Thanks for your understanding.
Patron Suggestion 6/10/2009: My workout this am could have been better. The music in the men’s locker room was way too loud. And I would like to request that you not use the station that was on between 10:30am – 10:45am. The first song was a plea for everyone in the world to get aids. The second was a rap song with constant F and A words. Your front desk staff folks promptly corrected the situation when I complained but still your students and patrons should not be subjected to this oral abuse.
SRC response: Thank you very much for this comment. We use an internet program to play music. Occasionally there is a song that is inappropriate. Once our staff hears one, or receives a complaint, that artist is removed from the variety list. Since we started to use this program we have continually filtered out inappropriate songs. The chances of having an inappropriate song have decreased dramatically, and will continue to improve.
Patron Suggestion 6/10/2009: Lights in the Green Gym are only partially on. Half of the lights are off even after switching all the lights on. Please fix them.
SRC response: We have sent this request to our building tech and he found that the lights are working properly.
Patron Suggestion 6/10/2009: I came this morning as I come usually to play badminton. The green gym is NOT occupied in the morning from 6:00am till 7:00am. The events typically start only at 7:30am. The person behind the desk – Carolyn – refused to put up the badminton nets on our request. There is no SRC rule that states that badminton should not be played in the morning. Then why is this sudden change in the policy? I am a student at ASU and I have paid for SRC access. I have the right to play when I want abiding the rules of the SRC. The actions of your employee goes against the rule. I request that when the green gym is not being scheduled for any activity you must allow anybody to play anything they want. I want to be contacted in the regard.
SRC response: We have made arrangements to allow badminton to be played 6:15am-7:15am on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Patron Suggestion 6/10/2009: If the locked door policy is to be enforced, the we must all have keys to open the door. All staff that is authorized to gain access to controlled areas have, the appropriate keys for access. Could you send an email out to the student body telling us what time you’re closing if it changes because I drive 30 min to get here and don’t always know when/what day hours changes for the summer etc. Thank you Selina.
SRC response: Our hours of operation are posted on our web site. In addition, the hours will changes during holiday times, interim periods and during the summer.
Patron Suggestion 6/10/2009: Please turn on air conditioning in small circuit workout room. We almost passed out.
SRC response: The University has adjusted the mandatory temperature requirement to allow facility to be a little cooler. In addition, we have requested an exception to the University’s policy, in order to cool out activity areas of the SRC. I believe that the rooms are cooler now. Please let a staff member know if it gets uncomfortable again.
Patron Suggestion 5/8/2009: In summer or/and fall schedule, would you schedule the yoga teacherKathy also for lunch or evening classes? She is a great teacher, but herclasses are either too early or in the weekend..I didnt get to take herclasses this Spring at all due to timing!
SRC response: Our schedules are a collaboration between the instructor and thecoordinator. All instructors submit their availability and arescheduled accordingly. Many instructors have other teaching obligationsand/or family commitments that do not allow them to teach all times.Kathy is a fantastic teacher and requested to teach early morning andweekend. She has requested the same schedule for Fall semester, so weare respecting her requests. She has an evening class one day per weekthis summer (per her request as well).
Patron Suggestion 5/7/2009: Any chance the rec center might provide a healthy lifestyles/weight loss support group (akin to the mindfulness group)?
SRC response: Thank you for the suggestion! The mindfulness group is actually runthrough Counseling and Consultation as a collaboration of the LivingWell Network. They may have programs that are related to your requestat Wellness and Health Promotion or Counseling and Consultation. Thanks for your feedback.
Patron Suggestion 5/7/2009: Are the SDMB and SDF classes still free during the finals and interim? In the past years they were....
SRC response: SDF and SDMB classes are free during finals week (May 6-13). For thefirst time, we are offering SDMB classes during the interim so theremust be a fee associated with it. Participants with a Spring pass cancontinue using their pass to attend classes through May 31. If you donot have a Spring pass you may purchase a summer pass which is validbeginning May 14.
Patron Suggestion 5/5/2009: How hard would it have been for you to post a timely, conspicuous announcement about the early SRC closing yesterday? I was at the SRC every day last week. I remember seeing an equipment-disinfecting recommendation on the large easel at the entrance, and the poster about locker renewal catches my eye every day. If there was a posting about yesterday's early closing, it was not strategically positioned or not posted early enough. For an Employee Banquet that must have been planned well in advance, there is no excuse for your not posting the closing at least eight days ahead.
I had unsuspectingly planned my day around an SRC swim at a time when sun exposure would no longer be an issue. Some families bring their children to the pool on Saturdays, and some groups of international students gather at the pool on late Saturday afternoons. Those people also had to have been disappointed.
SRC response: I am really sorry about the lack of communication regarding the hours of the facility. We posted it on the web but failed to post a sign in the facility. I will make sure we do a better job of communicating on the web site and in the facility.
Patron Suggestion 4/28/2009:
Summer SDMB pass is on sale very soon. Please post the summer 1 schedule and teachers, so we can check the class formats, frequency of classesand teachers, and decide accordingly if it is worth continue paying forthe summer yoga classes.
SRC response: The Summer 1 and Summer 2 schedules are posted online at http://src.asu.edu/SDMB. You can view the classes, times, and instructors on the Google calendar that is on the main SDMB page.
Patron Suggestion 4/27/2009: It's so hot in the small gyms at this time of year. I understand that solving the problem with more A/C may not be possible because of budget cuts/energy conservation. But what about using large fans (just during class times). It would make a world of difference. We need to maintain a cool workout environment for everyone, but especially for people who are more prone to heat sensitivity or other ailments. Thank you for considering all available options.
I agree with the previous poster that it is very uncomfortably warm in the SRC. Especially as the weather is getting hotter, we can't open the doors to alleviate the heat in the small gyms for SDF classes. There are a lot of moving bodies in a confined space and it is extremely hot and stifling.
SRC Response: Each year at this time experience the SRC being warmer than usual. In the past it was the result of building automations balancing the changes in outdoor temperature changes. However, in effort to conserve energy, this year ASU has established a temperature setting policy in all ASU facilities. We have several activity areas that have become increasing warmer. With that said, I am in the process of working with building automations to get an exception to the new temperature policy for the SRC activity areas only. We still want to conserve energy in offices and meeting spaces. However, we cannot jeopardize the health and safety of our patrons. We will also research the possibility, and effectiveness, of standing fans in activity areas.
Patron Suggestion 4/23/2009: With the current financial situation both in the state and in the country worsening every day, particularly in regards to the recent budget cuts, furloughs, etc., is the SRC expansion still being pursued? If yes, that seems very counterintuitive to lay off staff, reduce the pay of faculty, nearly double the in-state tuition, impose $1200 fees a year on grad students, and the list goes on, so that a very small percentage of ASU students can have a fitness palace
SRC Response: Thank you for your comments and expressed concerns. We have put the expansion efforts on hold. Our goal was to garner support and have students put forth a proposal for expansion of the SRC at the Spring ABOR meetings. With the economic issues and the other fees that were going forward it was not a good time for us to do this. We will however continue to look for support during the fall semester. A couple of notes to keep in mind is;
1. Students will not be fully assessed the expansion fee (approximately $25.00 per semester) until the facility is built (which will probably be 3-4 years from the time it is approved by ABOR).
2.The cost of construction is down approximately 30% which would lower the cost for students
3.History has shown that Student Rec Complexes have recruitment value to the university and ASU comparatively speaking is below the standards for facility square footage amongst PAC 10, Big 10, Big XII and peer institutions.
Again thanks for your comments.
Patron Suggestion 4/22/2009: the SRC has no air conditioning what so ever. the few fans located throghout the establishment are useless! the gym should be cold for safety reasons.
SRC Response: Last Fall a policy regarding temperature control in campus building was established. It was done so the university could save money associated with the energy of heating and cooling facilities. We will work with ASU Facilities Management to attempt to get an exception to the temperature policy on campus for the SRC.
Patron Suggestion 3/23/2009: I wish that the music would be better no swearing or negative messages. I like oldies and christian rock (105.5Fm or 94.5Fm)
SRC Response: Thank you for the recent feedback regarding the radio stations. We try to offer a fair variety of stations on a rotation for our customers. We are not able to completely filter the station’s choices of songs, but if there is something on that might be offensive, please let the facility manager know and we will try to change the station.
We also encourage people to bring in their own music or headphones for our cable TVs on our informal equipment.
Patron Suggestion 3/4/2009: Thank you for your comment.
There have been several issues with all of the stereo systems this semester. Some are due to user error, some have been technical issues, and some have been due to unauthorized use. We have readjusted and reinstalled parts in the stereos to working order several times, however, the issue with the yoga studio stereo was a blow electrical cord. We are working to get that issue resolved and make it operational again and also working to get a more permanent repair completed on all the machines.
SRC Response: Would you please fix the stereo in the yoga gym, the temporary one sometimes works sometimes doesnt, yoga classes doesnt feel same without
music. It has been a month that it is out of order.
Patron Suggestion 3/3/2009: What is the difference between "vinyasa flow yoga" classes and "flow yoga" classes offered @ SDMB?
SRC Response: Thanks for your question. Flow Yoga is a moderately-paced, energizing flow class. Poses are sequenced with the breath and students move from
one posture to another in a "flowing" manner to create strength, flexibility and body awareness. Each class includes asana (postures), breathwork, and relaxation. Vinyasa Flow is designed to increase stamina and body awareness, this class connects postures with "vinyasa", a sequence of movements that will align and strengthen the body.
Please see src.asu.edu/SDMB for class descriptions for all the other mindbody classes!
Thanks!
Patron Suggestion 3/3/2009: The SDMB Spring Break schedule is posted on the website: src.asu.edu/SDMB/Schedule. Paper schedules will also be available later
today. Please continue checking the website for up-to-date schedules, announcements, and changes.
SRC Response: What is the schedule for SDMB Yoga over the Spring Break? Pls let us know ASAP. Thank you!
Patron Suggestion 3/2/2009: The 4 instructor Zumba on 3/2 was a blast and I loved the new dances! Ever thought of adding a male instructor with latin dance experience? Keep up the good work!
SRC Response: Thank you for your compliments! Our Zumba instructors constantly try to shake it up by choreographing new dances. We will also be attending the
Level 2 workshop next month to get even better! We would love a male instructor and encourage any students who are interested in teaching to take the Zumba Basic Skills 1 certification here on April 25th. More information can be found at src.asu.edu/SDF.
Patron Suggestion 2/16/2009: any updates/info on the inline hockey dasher's being put up on the basketball court?
is it going to be mostly pickup/drop in play? how will the hours be shared with futsal?
SRC Response:We are currently waiting on four panels that should be delivered next week. Once we have all the parts we will put the system together.
As for the use of the space, we will have hours for certain type of use. Some will be for inline hockey and some for futsal. Once we have it up we will post the hours on the web. We will have informal/drop in play and organized Intramural leagues that will use the space.
Patron Suggestion 1/29/2009: Josh,at his lunch yoga classes he goes overtime--5-10 minutes. Please try to finish lunch yoga classes at 1:15. Some of us need to go to work, and need to leave the class without relaxing with the corpse pose. Thx
SRC Response: Thank you for your feedback. This has been relayed to Josh and he will make sure to keep his classes within the time allowed.
Patron Suggestion 1/26/2009: I know that the SRC cleans out lockers every semester. However, near theend of the semester, many of us have to sacrafice our SRC time to extrastudy time. Therefore, it's easy for locker patrons to miss the noticesposted in the building. It would be great if the SRC could send anyonewith a checked-out locker a notice before their locker is cleaned out.
SRC Response: Thank you for your comment. We would love to contact everyoneindividually about their locker expiration date, however, it is hard tomaintain this without having everyone's email address in our databaseand with constantly changing contact information. We try to get the wordout there the best we can by putting signs up in each locker room, thefront lobby, the upstairs lobby, notices in each locker, as well asposting it on the website. This information can also be found on thecontracts that are signed at the time of rental. Also, each semesterrental locker will always expire on commencement day of each semester. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. Thanks again and please comment again.
Patron Suggestion 1/26/2009: Hi! First, I know the new equipment was put in last semester, but Ithought I'd say that it was a great addition. It's so nice now that Idon't have to wait to use a machine:) On the down side, it drives me crazy when I can't find clean maintenancerags. I feel like when they aren't constantly available, people neglectcleaning off the machines when they're finished, which is kind of gross. Is there any way to either figure out a more efficient way of cleaningthem or purchasing more? I know it's a minute detail, but it just kindof bothers me.
SRC Response: Thank you for your comments. We are glad that your wait time has beenreduced for cardio equipment. Regarding the issue with the clean maintenance rags: This has been anongoing issue at the SRC. The shortage in maintenance rags usually occurbecause many people do not return their dirty rags to the dirty bin. Many are taken home, thrown away in the trash or left in other areas. This greatly reduces the amount of rags we can run through the laundry. We are constantly adding more new rags into circulation weekly to offsetthe amount that go missing. Hopefully this will reduce the instances ofhaving few or no clean rags available.
Patron Suggestion 1/22/2009: Thank you for posting the recent SRC holiday hours in a convenient location on your web page. A suggestion: when you post special building hours, please also specify the special pool hours. Newcomers don't know that a different pool-closing rule applies on Sundays, even if the building hours for a Saturday and the following Sunday might be the same. Someone at the SRC on the Saturday might notice others swimming until 7:00 and assume that, with the same building closing times, the pool would be open until that time the next day. Best of all would be to post the pool hours (regular and holiday) on the doors leading from the locker rooms to the pool.
SRC Response: Thanks for the comment. We will be sure to note the facility hours, including the pool, on the locker room doors leading to the pool. In addition, we will be sure that they are posted on our web site.
Patron Suggestion 1/20/2009: Facility Manager~ please keep the volume at the pool lower in the early morning. Work with the lifeguard to keep it lower during the early morning swim workouts.
SRC Response: We appreciate the feedback. We try to meet the needs of our participants. As many of our participants do enjoy music, we try to play
a variety at a reasonable volume. If you have any concerns with the music, please see the lifeguard. We can certainly adjust volume within the pool area, especially in the early morning
Patron Suggestion 1/16/2009: Can you bring back the Bootcamp class to SDF?
SRC Response: Thank you for your suggestion. We actually do offer "Bootcamp" classes on the SDF schedule, they are just now called "Basic Training". We had
to change the name due to confusion with the Commit to Get Fit Small Group Training classes that were also called "Bootcamp" - patrons were signing up for the wrong programs. Please enjoy the Basic Training classes that are offered in the Spring on Sundays at 1:15 with Tara.
Patron Suggestion 1/11/2009: Spring schedule: no weekend step warriors with Michelle????????--it was the best workout and the fun class ever!. Please bring it back. Also please bring the monday lunch step interval class with Michelle too!. She is the best teacher.
SRC Response: Thank you for your comments! As much as Michelle loves to teach classes on the Sun Devil Fit schedule, she is actually a full-time staff
employee of the SRC. The SDF schedule is created with student employees having first priority - Michelle only picks up classes if there are holes in the schedule as she has many other responsibilities within the Fitness and Wellness department. Please enjoy her morning classes this Spring (T/Th) as well as Club Step on Wednesdays at 4:15 (very similar to Weekend Step Warriors). We are confident that you will get GREAT workouts with the other classes on the schedule on Mondays and Fridays at noon.
Patron Question 1/8/2009: Too many people in the Blue Gym have been asking:
why would any intelligent SRC Coordinator .Schedule 8 people playing gym hockey .not only on the recently refinished Red Gym Floor but also during a peek hour.where over 40 basketball players are on the sidelines in the Blue Gym waiting for a game. >
Suggestion:
Green Gym is given to Gym Hockey Players.
Or blue Gym .Where sticks damage to wood surface will be minimal.
Note: Hoopsters used a similar term to the word intelligent. I am only quoting personally I have no bias.
SRC Response: The field hockey team was scheduled in the Maroon Gym because they need to train for a holiday tournament they were going to. And the fields were closed and they lost their practice site due to the construction of the ICA practice football bubble. They were placed in the Maroon Gym because we had activity scheduled in the Green Gym. However, I would agree that that would be a better location. It was not available. They were placed in the Maroon Gym instead of the Blue Gym because last year I put them in the Blue Gym and the hoopsters expressed that they were use to being in the Blue Gym. Our user counts demonstrate that hoopster prefer the Blue Gym over the Maroon Gym. Until the number reflex something different, I will continue to support the hoopsters use of the Blue Gym over the Maroon Gym.
Regarding the sticks on the floor, they are to use socks, or a similar material, on their sticks to prevent damage to the finish. If they were not, please let me know and I will talk to their coach.
With all that said, we do have an overcrowding problem here at the SRC. We cannot meet the demands of all the student needs, as well as the needs of the program and services of Campus Recreation. PE West Gymnasium is slated to become a large lecture hall. The result will be more loss space for the hoopsters because we will have to move the intramural games to the SRC.
We are presently marketing an expansion of the SRC. We would like the student to support a small semester fee to be paid, allowing the construction of an expansion of the SRC. If this is approved, we will be able to build more gym space, thus allowing us to meet more of the student needs. This will not answer all the problems of overcrowding but, it help greatly. If you are interested in reading more, please visit this following web site http://src.asu.edu/
Please share this information with your friends.
Patron Question 1/8/2009: I use an ipod with noise-cancelling headphones when using the SRC (typically on the elliptical). I find that even with my headphones, the music broadcast through the facility speakers intrudes, and disrupts, my workout. Most people using the SRC bring their own audio ~ please stop playing music that everyone has to hear. Thank You!"
SRC Response: The music that is played through the SRC sound system is intended to be back ground music and should not disrupt your workout. I will have our staff lower the volume. In addition, the music is played on rotation of different genre of music. The hope is that each person gets to listen to some music that they appreciate, at some time.
Patron Question 1/8/2009: Have the ASU basketball team practice in their own f__cking gym! Every day I come I am kicked out of the gym because the ASU team is practicing. The other gyms are packed with kids that also have to leave. Its ridiculous and pisses everyone off.
SRC Response: The ASU basketball teams have used the SRC for practice 10-12 times this past fall semester. There practices are moved here to accommodate their needs when they lose their entire arena due to University events, such as commencement.
Next year they will have their own practice facility. Therefore, they should not need to use our facility.
However, this will not address our over crowdedness. We do not have enough space to meet the needs of all ASU student and all programs and services offered by Campus Recreation.
In addition, there is a great possibility that PE West will be converted into a large lecture hall. This will force us to move our Intramural games to the SRC. The result will be greatly reduced space for drop in basketball.
With that said, we are presently marketing an expansion of the SRC. We would like the student to support a small semester fee to be paid, allowing the construction of an expansion of the SRC. If this is approved, we will be able to build more gym space. If you are interested in reading more, please visit this following web site http://src.asu.edu/

Patron Question 1/8/2009: PLEASE INSTALL HAND DISINFECTANT (PURELL) DIPENSERS
SRC Response: Although many grocery stores have started offer this service, our current financial situation does not allow us to provide this service. If you are concerned about the cleanliness of your hands, I encourage you to bring a small hand size bottle with you to the SRC. Another option would be to stop in our rest room and use the soap and water.
Patron Suggestion 1/8/09: I am an SRC student member. Please make sure that at least 2-3 Racquetball courts are available for regular SRC student members (SRC members in general) when tournaments are being conducted. Please reserve those courts for SRC members, strictly. I come to the SRC daily for playing racquetball for a couple of hours and I had to miss it on 8-10 days during the Fall 2008 semester because of racquetball tournaments. Moreover, please make alternative arrangements for accommodating Table Tennis tables as some of the racquetball courts are occupied with Table Tennis Tables.
SRC Response: Presently, we have two more contracted Racquetball events. During these events we will try to maintain 2 courts available for SRC membership. In the future, we will write the contract with the statement that they get 10 courts instead of 12.
Regarding the table tennis table used in the racquetball courts, this was done to provide the most services to SRC membership. We received numerous complaints that we did not offer enough Badminton and Table Tennis opportunities. Based on our limited space in the SRC, our best answer was to move two tables to two racquetball courts. Doing so open up some time in the Green Gym to increase badminton, time while offering more time for table tennis.
We are presently marketing an expansion of the SRC. We would like the student to support a small semester fee to be paid, allowing the construction of an expansion of the SRC. If this is approved, we will be able to build more gym space, thus allowing us to move the table tennis table to other areas. If you are interested in reading more, please visit this following web site http://src.asu.edu/
Patron Suggestion 12/15/08: Can you bring back the yoga/pilates samplers to sun devil group fitness?
SRC Response: Thank you for your suggestion. Due to facility and instructor time constraints we are unable to continue the sampler classes. We do offer free classes for the Mind Body program over the holidays and breaks, and we welcome your participation in those classes!
Patron Question 12/2/2008: This morning when I opened the door from the women's locker room to the pool, the first thing I heard loud and clear from the radio was a voice: " Are you telling me you had sex with her?!?! "Everywhere else that we go, sound, images and advertising are forced upon us. A university even in its recreational areas should be a different kind of place. People's musical and entertainment tastes differ widely. If the pool system has to be on at all, I'd appreciate having it barely audible.
SRC Response: We agree that this type of music/talk is not acceptable. We do everything we possibly can to be sure that offensive comments are not played through the radio system. Unfortunately, on few occasions a comment or song will slip by us on satellite radio. If you notice this happening, please let the nearest staff member know and we will change the station. We have the stations on a rotation and we will simply move to the next station to be played. Thanks for the feedback.
Patron Question 12/1/2008: Is there yoga in winter session? If not PLEASE offer Yoga classes during winter. We would like to keep our yoga practice going!
SRC Response: Thank you for your suggestion! Because of financial constraints we cannot run the regular yoga schedule year round. However, we understand
the desire to continue practicing over the winter session, so we are offering series of yoga workshops that participants may register for and take to continue practicing yoga. These can be found at http://src.asu.edu/InstructionalClasses. Thank you for your support of our program!
Patron Queston 11/26/08: I find it very discouraging that after the inconvenience of equipment changeover, increase in fees for non-student members, and the promises of better equipment, that several of the treadmills are already broken! They haven't even been in use for an entire semester. Why are we still having a problem with broken equipment?!?!
SRC Response: Thank you for your comment. The SRC is constantly working to repair any issues with the new cardio equipment. I can assure you that based on our records and inspections, no cardio machines have been down for the entire semester. We encourage users to notify us of any issues with specific machines whenever they come up. The sooner we hear about issues, the quicker we can address them. I am also excited to let you know that the cardio machines will soon be networked wirelessly to let us know about electronic or mechanical issues immediately.
Patron Queston 11/25/08: Please offer zumba classes during the week after 5 pm.
SRC Response: Thank you for your suggestion! We will take this into consideration as we develop the schedule for Spring. Our schedule is dependent on the
schedules of the instructors since they are all students at ASU as well, and must schedule their teaching around their academic classes. However, if their schedules permit, we will definitely add some Zumba classes in the evenings during the week!
Thanks again, and see you in class!
Patron Queston 10/13/08: Is it possible to put regular hair dryers to women's locker rooms?
SRC Response: Unfortunately, we cannot purchase these items as they are not a budgeted item, nor could be keep up with the maintenance associated with the replacement needs of retail hair dryers. We encourage patrons to bring their own hair dryers or use the drying units on the wall.
Patron Question 11/6/08: Will the Spring 09 SDF schedule be the same as Fall 08? If it is different, when will it be available? Just wanted to compliment Caitlyn and Liz on a great job with the Power Core and Stretch and Zumba classes respectively. Please consider adding more time slots for those classes.
SRC Response: Thank you for your compliments and comments. We are currently developing the Spring 09 SDF schedule. Since all of our instructors are students, we have to wait until they have registered for academic classes in order to work our schedule around their school. We are having our planning meeting over the next 2 weeks to determine what the schedule will be for Spring. We will take your suggestions into consideration if the instructor's schedule allows more classes. Thank you again!
Patron Question 10/6/08: Please also add Yoga classes that starts after 5:00pm. Josh, Tish andKathy are very good!
SRC Response: Thank you for your suggestion and for your compliments for our instructors! We will be adding evening yoga classes for next semester so check the website for updates! Thanks again!
Patron Question 10/28: Is halloween cardio jam open to all SRC members (free?) or only to SDF participants? Would be fun to be able to invite friends that are not SDF participants to this event!
SRC Answer: Thank you for your interest in the cardio jam. Yes, the event is FREE for ALL SRC members - no Sun Devil Fit pass required. Bring your friends! Join the fun! See you there!!!
Patron suggestion 10/7/08: Please update the instructors and classes (to intro fitness, basic training for this week)..they still have September dates and instructor names for those dates on the schedule.
SRC Response: Sorry for the inconvenience. We had technical difficulties on our web server and had to re-load our website from a back-up copy. The back-up didn't reflect changes that had been made within a couple days of the problem. We have since solved the problem and all classes should be updated for the proper week.
Patron Suggestion 10/6/08: With the new expansion project in mind, if it were to be passed would it be possible to see that platforms and bumper plates are added to make olympic lifts available. Right now the weight room is exceptional but these lifts are perfect full body workouts which would prove most beneficial. I understand that these lifts are also more dangerous but I feel that should not stop those with the experience to be denied the opportunity to get a good quality workout in. Also I believe there are enought people that would use this new equipment effectively, efficiently and safely. Thank you for your time.
SRC Response: Thank you for your suggestion. We are collaborating with students on this expansion project and love to have student input for new ideas in the weight room. The implementation of bumper plates and platforms would take a considerable amount of alterations to our facility due to the flooring and high demand for supervision. Although, we are looking into this as we have had a number of requests for an area that can be utilized for power lifting. Thank you again for your suggestion and please let us know if you have any other ideas for our new weight room!
Patron Wrote: 9/30/08 Very poor decision to decline Blue Gym for basketball on Saturday and Sunday when the Red Gym is unavailable. Open PE West for Flag Rehearsals. No reason to keep facility unavailable for basketball when the gym will service more users. Basketball = over 300 people on a Sat.
Response: Sorry about the inconvenience. The situation was that we had events in PE West and PE East. We also had a contracted use for the Blue Gym. With the Maroon Gym under repairs, that left no space for Open Rec basketball for a short period of time.
Although we attempt to keep the Blue Gym available for Open Rec basketball, we cannot guarantee that it will always be available. With the size of ASU continually growing, and the need to meet the need of student organizations, University Departments and sometimes Community Groups, there may times that the Blue Gym will be used for other functions, for short periods of time, on weekends. We will do our best to provide Open Rec basketball on weekdays, uninterrupted.
In addition, based on your comment, you are aware that we use PE West and PE East facility as over flow activities and for intramurals. These facilities are scheduled to be renovated into academic facility in the future. That may mean that we no longer would have those gymnasiums. If this occurs we would lose over 30,000 sq ft of court space. Activities that presently are in those facilities would be moved to the SRC. The end result would be little if any Open Rec activities in the SRC.
This is a worst case scenario. However, it is one that could become reality. Therefore, we are launching a campaign to gain support to expand the SRC to the East of the present facility. Such and expansion could include, large gym space (similar to PE West) and two multipurpose courts that could house indoor soccer and inline hockey, multiple meeting room, expanded weight room and cardio equipment and a rock climbing wall. There could be many other amenities as well. This type of expansion has to be supported by the student for the students.

Patron Wrote: 9/12/08: Wondering who is going to replace yoga teacher Julie? Hope you will hire a new and good yoga teacher, instead of providing subs for her scheduled classes for the rest of the semester. Please let us know.
Response: Thank you for your comment! We are currently in the process of hiring Marco Gamez to take over Julie's 10:45 am class on Mondays, which will
be "Hatha Yoga". He will begin at the end of the month. Marco has an extensive background in yoga, and his bio will be up on the website next

12-1:15 pm Flow Yoga class, and Josh will be taking over the Wednesday 12-1:15 pm Flow Yoga class.
Please continue enjoying the mind body offerings we have here!

The pricing is $155 for students and $210 for non-students.
Thanks again, and see you in class!

There is only one squash court, and it is reserved most of the time. It is getting harder and harder to find availability. I observe that there are many racquetball courts that are empty most of the time. Would you consider providing one more squash court? One court for squash is not enough for meeting the current need.
Response:
Several years ago, we attempted a referendum to expand the SRC. Part of the expanded SRC included a movable glass back wall that would allow us to use a court for Racquetball and Squash. Unfortunately the student voted down the referendum. Therefore, we could not provide this renovation.
Given our current budget, we cannot make this renovation without an expansion.
Sorry that we cannot help.

Thank you for your comment. We have changed the name of "Pilates on the Ball" to "Pilates" in order to allow the instructor the freedom to utilize more equipment than just the ball. The Pilates instructor will be utilizing the ball in class along with the Pilates Circle, mat, andbands. Thank you for your continued participation in our program!

Although there are many fans of John Mayer that are members of the SRC, we are unable to make your request into a reality. There are countless other members of the SRC that would not appreciate the constant replaying of a song.
I suggest the use of headphones and a personal radio device that will allow you to listen to the music that you are requesting.

It seems ASU is lacking one very important thing: An indoor track! Treadmills are not the same and they are frequently broken or occupied
Response:
There are many students that agree with you. However, there is no funding to renovate the SRC to accommodate an indoor track. Several years ago, we asked the student to support a fee increase to expand the SRC. The expansion would have included an indoor running track. Unfortunately, the student voted against the fee increase. We hope that someday the SRC will be expanded to support the number of users that it experiences. Then at that time, we may be able to get an indoor running track.

This is the most run down college recreation I have ever visited. I am disappointed in the quality of all the cardio equipment. Are there any new machines on site. The first two treadmills I went to use were broken and the rest look and sound awful. The Stairmaster (weight room) are abysmal and while I made due with the bike those are pretty crummy too. Any insight as to if an investment will be made in the near future to improve facilities?
Response:
Thanks for the comments. Sorry that you are not satisfied with the equipment we have to offer at the SRC. We make every effort to provide the best programs and services to our patrons. Unfortunately, we have a limited budget to spend. Often we do not have large amounts of money to spend on new equipment. I am writing to you regarding the summer schedule for the Mind Body classes.
I am a student here at ASU and have been taking the Mind Body classes for the whole of Spring 2008.
It has been very well organized and I enjoyed the experience. I have regularly attended the morning 7AM -8AM schedule all week days.
When I inquired about the summer schedule, I was informed that there will be no morning sessions.
This has been a common concern for many of us in the workout. Some of us would have to drop out as the other times are not feasible. Can you please consider including morning sessions so we can all benefit from it?
Thanking you
Response:
Thank you for your message, and I am very happy to hear you enjoy the classes you are attending! It is feedback such as yours that helps us update and improve out programming.
Unfortunately for summer 2008 we are unable to offer morning yoga options because due to resource constraints. The SDMB progam is self-supporting, and it is challenging every summer to have to reduce our schedule to a limited number of classes.
I thank you for writing to me, and I will make sure to pass this information along to others who coordinate and decide our programming.
I apologize for the inconvenience over the summer for your morning practice, and I do hope you can join us this summer for noon or evening classes. These schedules will be available in the next couple of days on our website: www.src.asu.edu
Thank you

The system is set-up to have one central music source. We are presently playing a 90's/Alternative station from Sirius Satellite Radio. If it is not a preferred music of your choice, I would recommend use of head phone.
In addition, the music in the SRC is not intended to be a motivational source for a person's workout. It is purely background music. Since all members have different music preferences, I encourage the use of head phone..

I apologize for responding late to your November 5th comment card about both the elliptical machines and Swimming pool timer, but I wanted to have the correct answers for you before I responded.
I wanted to let you know that I have looked into solutions for both questions that you had.
1) Regarding the reading racks on the elliptical machines; we have replaced 5 of the reading racks that were either missing or broken in the 2nd floor loft area as of yesterday 1/3/08.
2) Regarding the lap clock at the pool; after speaking with the Program Coordinator of Aquatics, we are still trying to find a solution for this problem. The issue with the clocks is the heat. The manufacturers of many of these pool clocks do not take into account the hot conditions of Arizona, and that is why many of them break down. So, at this time we are looking for better clocks or to find ways to better maintain the equipment we have.
I thank you for pointing out these issues to our staff and taking the time to fill out a comment card. Your comments are always appreciated and are important to the maintenance of this building. Please feel free to fill out any further comments cards when needed or for anything that you especially like about the SRC.

Original Comment: Jim's 12pm yoga class s/b 1.5 hours long adn start at 12:15pm Reply: Due to the large number of participants who come to class over the noon hour, the classes at these times are generally kept to 60 mintues so that the maximum number of people can attend. We have had these classes at 60 minutes for many semsters now. Regarding 12:15pm start time, this is a point we can consider. Our other classes begin at 12:15 and end at 1:15pm. Thanks.
Response:
Original Comment: Dusty, dirty gym floors in Small gym area and reduction of yoga classes from 80 minutes to 60 minutes. Make classes 75 minutes like professional studios. Reply: We continue to work with our facilities staff to maintain the cleanliness of our small gym areas. This is an ongoing process as we try to create times with the staff to clean the gyms regularly. Regarding the length of yoga classes, we have never offered 80 minute classes. There were a couple of times in the past where 1 class was 75 minutes (from 12:05 - 1:20pm) over the noon hour. However, it has not been like that for a few semesters now - and the change was made to streamline the times noon hour classes were offered and to accomodate the 60 minute format that met the needs of most members (based on feedback). Teh option to provide 75 minute classes may exist for our morning and afternoon/evening classes, but noon hour will most likely remain at 60 minutes. Please note, professional studios do not all run 75 minute classes. Many offer a variety of class lengths and both 60 and 75 minute formats are common.
Thanks.

To the program coordinators of the Sun Devil Fit program:
I hope I am contacting the right people. I am a graduate student and have been attending Sun Devil Fit classes for the last 5 years. I missed the student evaluation day this semester, and I would really like to give some student feedback. The schedule this past semester has been the most poorly planned I have ever seen (I ' ll explain my reasons for this statement below). This poorly planned schedule has significantly impacted attendance in the group fitness classes there has rarely been more that four or five people in any class I have attended all semester (I mainly attend strength training and yoga classes.) The biggest issue for most students is odd scheduling (ask any of them).
Please allow me to suggest that Sun Devil Fit stop offering these ? hour " sampler" classes. No one that I know is very motivated to make it to a class that lasts only half an houryou barely feel like you 're getting started. These courses are never as good as their hour counterparts, and I can 't fathom a good reason why these are offered this is simply a bad idea.
I mean no offense, but the half hour " sample class" is a thoroughly stupid and illogical concept, for the following reason: If a student wants to " sample" a yoga class, she will simply go to an hour class and decide if she likes it!
If a student is interested in a Mind/Body yoga class, she is more likely to want to sample one or two courses from that program than try it in Sun Devil Fit first and then switch programs. If the issue is the expense of having a yoga class in the regular fitness program (and I can ' t imagine why this would be the case), then just offer a more limited schedule of full hour yoga classes students devoted to yoga will realize they can get more out of the Mind/Body program and switch to that instead.
These sample classes may be a good idea for the first two weeks, but after that they are simply unfulfilling please stop offering them! A quick look at the Sun Devil Fit course schedule shows that these are sprinkled all over the place, taking up time slots that could be devoted to full hour courses, yoga or otherwise. For the first time, it actually feels like it is difficult for students to get their money ' s worth out of the program.
In the past, classes have been scheduled twice a week at the same time. For example, if I wanted to do strength training and I have a job (or a full course load), I might be able to attend a 4pm course on Monday and Wednesday, or 5pm on Tuesday and Thursday. For some bizarre reason, this semester there are several courses that are not offered during the same time slot all week, and seldom taught by the same instructor twice. There is an excellent 4pm strength class on Wednesday, for example, that has no counterpart. (I' d have to rearrange my schedule to go to the 3pm or 5pm on Monday, and I don ' t imagine I 'm alone, given the typical structuring of a university course schedule). In addition, students like to take courses from the same instructor a couple of times a week it helps with making progress, and we sometimes simply have instructor preferences.
Please think these issues through more thoroughly when creating the schedule! It is abundantly clear that more foresight needs to go into developing the schedule, with particular attention to students ' needs. Please no more sampler classes--just provide a few one- hour yoga or pilates class, please?

Thank you very much for your message on Oct. 30, 2007, we appreciate the time you took to contact us.
I am sorry to hear that you are not happy with the current SDF schedule of classes. We do our very best each semester to provide a variety of quality programming for our members. I would like to respond to a couple of your comments specifically in an effort to open the channels of communication.
Sampler classes I respect your opinion on the presence of these classes on the schedule. These formats do have a history of success, and a number of participants do find them valuable and include them as a part of their regular activity. We have typically included these classes as a way to introduce these formats to new members and to offer a wider variety of class formats on the SDF class schedule.
I do want to point out that the presence of the sampler classes on the SDF schedule does not in ANY way impact the number or the times of any SDF classes offered. We currently program SDF classes only in Gyms B & D and mind/body classes only in Gym C. Mind/Body sampler classes are only offered in Gym C and are taught by our mind/body instructors - not our SDF instructors. In fact, most of the time Sampler classes are offered at the same time as other SDF classes are, so their presence on the schedule is actually creating more classes at the same time, not less. If the samplers were removed, there would actually be fewer classes on the SDF schedule to choose from.
We continually evaluate the impact of our programming when planning for each new semester, and we will certainly take your feedback into account when reviewing this fall and planning for the upcoming spring terms.
SDF class schedule> Again, you bring up some good ideas here. Our SDF program is student led and driven - a fantastic opportunity for the entire ASU community! While it may seem optimal to offer the same pattern of classes each day at the same time, this is not a reality for most fitness facilities and programs (not only at ASU!) due to instructor availability and facility space. We do our best to provide both a variety and balance to our progamming so that there are classes offered at similar times on M/W and T/Th, however, we cannot guarantee that the class format or instructor can be the same each time. Our instructors have many skills and talents that we try to showcase on our schedule, within the limitations of instructor availability and other responsibilities. It is not uncommon for group exercise schedules to vary from day-to-day what class formats and instructors are scheduled.
There has been tremendous increases in group exercise class formats in recent years also. A few years back, there were a few formats that were often offered MANY times during the week - primarily because there were fewer to choose from. As new formats develop and participant tastes change, there has been a great opportunity to offer a much wider array of classes - sports conditioning to dance - in addition to our favorites like strength, step and kickbox. Based on feedback we receive, it seems that a majority of members enjoy this greater variety.
We do value the feedback from every member - just like you - and we really do work hard to create an enjoyable and effective program for you to participate in. Your feedback to us is very timely as we move towards Spring 2008 scheduling. We are planning some fun, new formats, as well as evaluating the current schedule to look for improvements as always. Please feel free to contact me for any follow up information or questions.
Thank you so much for your participation in Sun Devil Fit, we look forward to having you join us in Spring 2008.

We are writing to express our concern about the ever shortening time that the water aerobics classes are offered each semester. This term, the last day of class is the end of this week, October 26th. Earlier years, the classes have run until after Veteran ' s day and before that, they ran until the last full week of classes.
In the spring semester, the classes do not now start until after spring break. In earlier years they began the second or third week of the semester. Many of us take these classes because joint injuries and limitations mean that these are the best possible alternatives for us. Substituting other classes are not typically options for us given our physical limitations.
We would like you to extend the weeks that the classes are offered both this semester and next. While we understand that you may not want to run all classes that long MWF would work for us this semester. If you are unwilling to do this, then we would like money back or changes in the fees since we pay what everyone else does but won ' t have the same access to classes as others do without our limitations.
Sincerely,
Class members:

Dear Class Members:
Thank you very much for your email message and letter to me regarding AquaFit classes in the Sun Devil Fit program. Your willingness and time to provide feedback on our programming is very important to us - as well as your participation in our programming.
I have read your concerns regarding the ending date for the AquaFit classes this fall, and I have done some research into previous semesters' end dates, participation and fees for these classes. I think there are a couple of programming changes and perceptual changes that have occured over the past couple of fall semesters that can be separated to help up better understand the choice of AquaFit end dates and to make positive future programming changes.
Here are some of the items I have been thinking about
1. In the past (pre-2005) we used to offer a separate SDF Pass just for AquaFit classes and during that time period classes did go until around Veteran's Day each fall. In an effor to stremline programming and make AquaFit on par with all of the other SDF classes, this specific Aqua pass program was eliminated and AquaFit is a member of our total repetoire of SDF classes available to everyone for one program fee. This has been a postiive overall programming change the we intend to maintain.
2. In reviewing participation numbers for AquaFit classes in years past, there is a dramatic drop off in participation once the end of October and November arrive. I confirmed this trend with other members of our SRC staff, and the reality of small classes and inclement weather was the primary catalyst for ending AquaFit at the end of October. We are experiencing a very unusually pleasant fall right now, and it would be wonderful to extend the season, but the reality of our staffing capabilities and programming requires us to use consistent end dates and "deal" with the weather surprises mother nature send us.
I believe the changes to eliminate Aqua-specific passes and end the Aqua season as of the end of October occured around the same time about 2 years ago. That might be why it seems so dramatic right now. Unfortunately, we will not be able to extend this fall's AquaFit season at such short notice because of staffing assignments and decisions that were made prior to my involvement. I do know that the beginning and ending dates for all fall programing were announced and included in all promotional materials at the beginning of the semester when program registration began and fall fees were paid. Perhaps if we had received feedback regarding these concerns earlier in the fall when dates were announced, we would have had more opportunity to consider an extension.
One of the biggest challenges to AquaFit programming is keeping and getting bodies in the pool near the end of the fall and beginning of the spring. Our outdoor pool is fantastic, but the reality of programming is that we REALLY need to have lots of participant bodies in the pool to keep our classes going. Can each of you help us in this charge? We will do our best to promote via a wide variety of mediums, but the best marketing tool still remains one of the simplest and straightforward - Word of Mouth promotion. Your assistance in telling your friends, colleagues, students about our programming and helping us fill the pool will really make a difference in our ability to provide more classes, longer seasons and obtain equipment and facility space.
As we look to the future, I do think it is possible to consider beginning AquaFit before Spring break and extending to fall towards Veteran's Day. I will investigate this and see if our facilities space and staff availability accomodates this positive programming change for you and our other members. I understand the benefits for many of us from water-based exercise, and I encourage you to check out some of our other programming as it continues to change and expand. It is possible that other classes might be available to you indoors - such as Pilates, yoga, and other activities which are kinder to the body but provide a great workout. We continue to expand these opportunities as well.
I am still learning all of the details of the AquaFit programming, since this is the first time I am really overseeing this program. I ask for your patience and continued communication with me to work on programming improvements in this area. We will continue to communicate with each of you as valuable members of the SRC and our programs, particularly the water!
Thank you again for all your time and efforts sending me this information and feedback.

Why is the Green Gym completely empty @5pm and the Red Gym being used for a career event? It has taken over an hour to get on a basketball court. Unbelievable.
Response:
Ryan,
I just realized that I did not reply to your comment. Please accept my apology.
The Green Gym was scheduled to be used by ASU Volleyball that day from 5pm > -> 8pm followed by Open Recreation volleyball from 8pm > -> 11pm. I understand the frustration that you, and many others, experience in the evenings with limited court space. We attempt to have the Maroon and Blue Gyms open as much as possible. However, there are times when we will book one of the Gyms for events. The Maroon Gym is typically the gym that is booked because of the exit spaces. We will always maintain one gym for drop in basketball.
Sorry for any inconvenience and sorry for the delay in responding.

More than half the treadmills are broken & almost all of them are in terrible shape!
Response:
As I shared on your voice mail, I walked the floor and noticed that we have two out of 20 treadmills not operating. I am sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause. We are waiting on parts to be delivered. As soon as the parts come in, we will make the necessary repairs.
Regarding the shape the treadmills, yes the treadmills are not the most recent models but they work very well, and allow use to spend operational money on other budget needs. In the event that we see the need to replace the present treadmills, we will prioritize which one(s) and how many.

For the other, we are waiting on a Woodway rep to come out and inspect the equipment and help pin point the source of the problem. In addition, we had one of our staff members leave the University. On behalf of the Campus Recreation Department, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused during this past weekends National Doubles Racquetball Tournament. We are constantly trying to create new ways to better serve our patrons and it is not our intention to misplace our members. Although we realize that the tournament brings in increase in traffic flow in our facility and reduces the number of available racquetball courts down to only one; it is important to understand that this is a great event for the university. The National Doubles event is a very prestigious event, hosting some of the worlds top racquetball players. The Student Recreation Complex is known around the world as one of the top racquetball venues.
By hosting events such as this one, it also helps us reach our goals set forth by the president ' s office of reaching out to the community to establish partnerships, generate revenue, as well as to bring exposure to the campus. In order to assist you to plan your workouts around these events, we are posting up signs in the building approximately one week in advance of the event as well as posting a notice on our website of upcoming events. Please feel free to offer your suggestions so that we can keep our members informed of future events in order to reduce the inconvenience while still accomplishing our goals.

I have noticed that the five older stair steppers that are upstairs are never used. Everyone is always on the two newer ones. I was wondering if there was someway to sell these 5 and trade them in for newer ones. I realize they might not be getting five back but even 2 newer ones that will be used are better than 5 that just sit there.
Thanks!
Response:
We have used the trade in method on many pieces of equipment. We do so primarily when the equipment is in need of replacement because of operational needs or demands.
Right now, the steppers upstairs operate fine. If we find ourselves investing quite a bit of money to repair the equipment, we may have to reduce the number of steppers, to replace the ones that are costing more to repair.
Secondly, we do not have a large surplus of money to spend on replacement equipment. Ideally we would want to replace all the cardio equipment every 4-5 years. Unfortunately, we do not have the money budgeted to provide this replacement service. With that said, we have to make priorities regarding which pieces of cardio equipment we replace. Since the steppers are still operating well, they are not on the priority list to replace.
Sorry that we are unable to accommodate your suggestion. It is a great suggestion and I wish we could do it.

Justin: please turn on the aerators. Thank you.
Response:
One of our pumps has been going out the past couple of months (at least it lasted 18 years). They started replacing it on Wednesday morning. When they pulled the old one out the concrete below was bad so they had to pour new concrete. The plan was to have it up and running today. Unfortunately the concrete was not ready to hold a 1000 pound pump so they have to wait until Monday to install it. The reason all of this maters is that when we run on one of the two pump there is not enough pressure to run the aerators.
I really wish that we could have held off until October to replace the pump but it hit a point that it need to be replaced. We will be replacing the second pump later this year after the aerators are not as crucial to water temperature. I am sorry that this had to happen this time of year. The water has been very comfortable all summer until the past two days.

Any chance you're going to put the lanes back the way they were (25 m). I like the longer lanes and fewer flip turns but in an already over-utilized facility, it's that much harder to get a lane. More shorter lanes seem better.

With the growth spurt and large increases in ASU enrollment, how is the SRC planning to accommodate large number of students?
Are there plans to build additional fields?
Expanding other facilities on the main campus?
Response:
We anticipated this potential problem several years ago and went the student requesting support for an increased student fee that would help expand student services at the SRC and the MU. Unfortunately, the concept was voted down. Therefore, we are making the best of what facilities we have. The increasing enrollment and the additional residential halls on campus may have an impact on the type of programs and services we are able to offer in future years.
In addition, ASU has made the move to one campus many places. What that means for Campus Recreation is that a student that is enrolled at Poly, West or Downtown campuses s\he will be able to use the Tempe campus recreation facility (SRC). The same applies to students who are at Tempe, they can use the facilities at the other campuses. This new policy will cause increasing numbers of users in the SRC.
To relieve the increased user load at the SRC, we have built the Sparky> ' s Yard, increased the number of electrical outlets and modified one of the racquetball courts. Sparky> '> s Yard is a outdoor cardio and strength facility that is open during the high volume use. This facility has lightened the load in the indoor WR. The addition of the electrical outlets allowed us to purchase additional treadmills. And, modifying the racquetball court into a stretching/martial arts room allowed us to do more programming in the Small Gyms area.
We only have one playing field in front of SRC and it is often full. Availability is very low. We have three outdoor activity spaces; SRC West Field, SRC East Field and the Band Field. The primary function of these fields are for programming of events. We agree that informal/drop in play is limited. However, as you stated, space is very limited. Our outdoor space equals close to 12 acres. A school our size should have at least 20-25 acres of quality field space. Since the campus is land locked, the chances of addition space is limited. However, we are researching some off campus spaces that we hope could help. Finally, ICA is building a new practice facility where the Band Field is located. They plan on relocating the Band Field. However, the field that is going to be relocated will be smaller than what is necessary for programming of events. With that said, we will lose space causing us to use the SRC Fields for even more programming.
Please feel free to contact me with more questions, if you have them.

Response:
Thank you for your comment regarding sign-in sheets for ellipticals. Currently we are not set up to monitor and
enforce such a procedure, although our posted policies encourage participants to keep usage to 30-minutes if others are waiting. We recognize the popularity of these pieces and we have added 5 new elliptical crosstrainers in the upstairs loft area. We have also ordered 5 more to replace older models. We will continue to add ellipticals as our budget will allow. Thanks for your comment, and for participating in our Strength and Cardio program!

"The machines are so old I'm afraid they will break if I use them. The treadmills with the tractor track make the user trip and there are never enough working treadmills for people that want to run. At least 3 are always broken!"
Response:
We maintain the machines on a regular basis. We have a very extensive maintenance program for the cardio and strength equipment in the SRC. It is because of the maintenance that we conduct, that the equipment last as long as it does. We would agree that we need to replace some of the older equipment with newer equipment. However, we do not have the money to invest in this type of replacement.
As for the Woodway treadmills tracks causing a trip hazard, many of our patron enjoy the Woodway treadmills and I the equipment is proven to be safe by industry tests. However, we try to provide a diverse selection of equipment.
With that said, I encourage you to use the Precor treadmills. They have a smooth belt and may allow you to work out more comfortably.
Finally, because of the high use we experience at the SRC, we do experience some down time with our equipment. We attempt to get the equipment repaired as soon as possible. However, sometimes we have to wait on parts that may be back ordered, or for a company to come in to make the repair.
Thanks for your comment.

"Every time I come into the SRC, the Aquafina Machines are out of water. Why aren't they stocked more often? "
Response:
Please let the SRC Front Desk staff know when the machines are out of stock. We will contact the MU Info Desk to make them aware that the machines need to be re-stocked.

" Need to resurface the pool deck! Also need to re-Carpet the floors. "
Response:
We are aware of both of these issues. Both repairs involve a substantial cost. These costs are beyond what the SRC can financially afford to pay. Therefore, we are submitting both repairs as part of the end of year repair
request.

" We need a clock!! Thanks! "
Response:
We have attempted to place a clock in all activity areas possible. Due to damage to clocks, we do not place clocks in the large gym areas.
If you have a specific area that you are interested in, please let me know and we will try to put one up.
Thanks for the comment.

" it is hot by the treadmills. Put up shades to block the sun/turn down the AC get nice treadmills. Not safe to run when it is so hot in here. "
Response:
We recently trimmed the trees at the pool, allowing more sunlight in the facility. As result, it took a few days for the air temperature to balance. I hope that you are more comfortable working out now. If not, please notify the
front desk and we will contact Facilities Management.
Regarding the installation of shades, the SRC operates with natural lightning as much as possible. Therefore, will not be installing shades on the windows.
Finally, I am sorry that you are unhappy with the condition of the treadmills. We purchased new treadmills approximately a year ago. Treadmills are very expensive and we have established a replacement plan. The plan does not include the treadmills to be replaced for at least 2 years. If you discover any broken
equipment, please inform the SRC staff and we will get it repaired as soon as we are able.
Thanks for the feedback.

"I would like to know why bad language is not listed among the SRC policies. I was working out and a group of guys, standing 2 feet away from front desk, were swearing up the storm."
Response:
Swearing could be considered misconduct. Please report any comments that maybe offensive to the SRC Staff. The staff will ask the patron to refrain from using the language. If they continue to use the offensive language, they would
be asked to leave.
Thanks for the comment.

"Please don't play the radio in the shower room. Everyone's musical taste
are different and it s not good to have to listen to radio personality chatter."
Response:
Unfortunately, we have had many patrons ask that the music be turned on it all
areas of the building. Therefore, we will not turn the radio off. However, we
will make sure we lower the volume in the locker rooms.
Regarding the personality chatter, if you find the chatter offensive, please let
the front desk know. We will change the station.
Thanks for the comment.

"Can you please please please get the other set of showers working in the
women's locker room? They worked before - what is the deal? Please please
please some of us like a little privacy."
Response:
There was a leak under the ceramic tiled floor that flooded some controls in the
basement of the SRC. It was discovered that one of the drains in the shower
area needed to be repaired and replaced. The plumbing repair has been made.
Now we are waiting for the contractor to lay the tiles. We hope to have the
project completed by next Monday.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

"Nice environment but staff is not friendly. I know it is the first day of
classes and it's busy but at least put a smile on your face." Holly
Response:
We agree with you 100%. We will be sure to continue to educate our staff on
the importance of keeping a smile on their face. We do understand that our
attitude will have an impact on our users attitude. A positive attitude starts
with a smile.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

"The same songs that were played last semester are being played. Have more
variety, like 24 hour fitness"
Response:
We are considering using satellite radio in the SRC. However, this will not
completely solve the issue. Each person has different musical preference.
Therefore, we keep the radio at a low volume level and consider it background
noise. For those that use the radio has a method of motivation while working
out, we encourage them to use headphones.
Thanks for the comment.

" For recycling -> No one uses the recycling bins "
Response:
We encourage all our patrons to use the recycling bins for items that can be
recycled. We have placed the recycling bins in location that we feel are easily
accessible. In addition, we ask our staff to assist with recycling effort while
they are on duty.

"Too busy Needs to be at least 3 times bigger "
Response:
The SRC averages 4800 people per day. The majority of these users prefer to
participate after 4:00pm on weekdays. This causes a tremendous problem with
overcrowding. There is little Campus Recreation can do to reduce the
overcrowding. We do encourage people to work out during the low use times,
8:00am> -> 11:00am and 2:00pm> -> 4:00pm.
The concern of overcrowding will continue to escalate as the university
continues to expand and build more residence halls near the SRC. With this in
mind, we are organizing committees that will discuss possible solutions. We
encourage anyone that is interested in participating to contact us. If you are
interested please contact me directly at the number below or call the SRC
mainline at 480-965-8900.
