SRC and the Community
SRC student and professional staff are committed to giving back to the surrounding community though service and involvement. Below are a few highlighted examples of some of our volunteer work.
Adopt-a-class
Adopt-a-class began in Fall 2007 as an effort to branch fitness expertise out into lower-income communities. Every month, the fitness and wellness program coordinators teach 7th and 8th grade students at Lowell Elementary school fun and new ways to stay fit. So far, classes have been taught on kickboxing, yoga, Pilates, sports conditioning, and boot camp. Additionally, 2 in-service workshops have been provided for the Phoenix school district PE teachers on kickboxing (October 2007) and boot camp (February 2008).
Haven House
Haven House is a transitional living facility for women and their children, designed to provide a safe, secure environment and to assist mothers in obtaining the education and training they need to find adequate employment and transition to self-sufficiency.
SRC personal trainers and Sun Devil Fit instructors have been providing twice-a-month fitness classes and workshops for the women at the Haven House as part of their “Life Skills” series. Over the past 3 semesters, we have taught classes on kickboxing, yoga, strength training, hip hop, and salsa dancing! Additionally, one workshop was dedicated to teaching infant and child CPR skills for reference.
Ironman Arizona
SRC student employees volunteer every year for the Ironman Arizona triathlon. Lifeguards volunteer for the swim, both in and out of the water (kayaks and lifeguarding), and the Fitness and Wellness program captains a run-aid station to assist during the marathon (handing out water, Gatorade, etc). Approximately 50 student employees helped out with this fun event, which took place this year on Sunday, April 13th.
Diabetes Expo For American Diabetes Association
The Fitness and Wellness program co-chairs the “Active Fit Fun World” booth annually at the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Expo in Phoenix. SRC personal trainers and Sun Devil Fit instructors teach mini classes/workshops and answer questions for expo attendees. This year the Diabetes Expo was on Saturday, April 26th at the Phoenix Civic Center, and SRC employees taught mini classes on yoga, weight training, and aerobics. Additionally, they worked during a one hour question and answer session with the fitness professional.
Race for the Cure Arizona
Each year SRC employees join the "ASU Gold" team to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research.
Pat's Run
Each year SRC employees lace up their running and walking shoes to paritpicate in Pat's run! Proceeds benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation and its youth leadership programs which promote positive action to benefit the community. Funds raised benefit the Leadership Through Action™ program at ASU.

ASU Hockey teams hosts Art of Tempe
The SRC would like to recognize the ASU Hockey team for their community service. The Hockey team hosted Arc of Tempe during a BYU game on September 24, 2009. Before the game Arc of Tempe participants toured the locker room, met players, and received Sparky ice pucks. Go Sun Devils!
