Williamsburg, VA- The ASU Men’s Gymnastics Team captured its 11th Team title today in the 2009 USA Gymnastics Collegiate National Championships held on the campus of William & Mary. Nine men’s teams qualified for the championship meet- 5 Varsity (NCAA) and 4 Collegiate (Non-funded) teams. Team titles and All Around were awarded separately for both divisions. ASU won the Collegiate division with a solid score of 20.35. ASU was led by All-Arounder, freshman Alex Gaudaur (CA) who finished 1st in the All Around while qualifying to the individual finals on 3 events: Floor Exercise, Still Rings and Vaulting.
“We had a slow start on High Bar and Pommels,” said ASU head coach Scott Barclay. “The pressure of a big meet hit our young team at first but they came back and kept their heads up and that’s exactly what we needed”, said Barclay. “The whole team pulled together and finished the year off on a good note. We didn’t hit as well as we could have,” said Assist coach, Daniel Hayden, “but we worked hard all year preparing for this meet and we went after it with heart.”
Sophmore Josh Bradley (Nebraska) showed his competitive drive by qualifying for the event finals on Rings and Vault. Bradley suffered a bad sprained ankle last week and was questionable going into the competition tonight.
Freshman Riley Barclay (Chandler) came through for the team as he qualified on both Floor and Pommel Horse. Barclay also earned All America status taking 5th place in the All Around.

ASU Instructor to be Inducted into Hall of Fame
(PDF) Tempe, AZ
September 11, 2008
Dr. Joe Parish, President of the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame announced they are honored to recognize one of the top martial artists in the world at the 2008 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies scheduled in Linthicum Heights, Maryland on November 14th. Dr. Parrish indicated they will induct Professor W. Dan Hausel of Arizona State University for his lifelong contributions to the martial arts.Professor Hausel currently instructs Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo through SRC (http://src.asu.edu/InstructionalClasses) and is providing some guest instruction in cardio classes during the fall semester. But few of the students, if any, are unaware of the accomplishments of their instructor.
Hausel is one of only a handful of grandmasters of Shorin-Ryu Karate in the world. Shorin-Ryu is indigenous to Okinawa and there is only one grandmaster per style. Thus it is unique for anyone to become a grandmaster, and very rare for non-Japanese. In 1999, Hausel was certified as Grandmaster of Seiyo No Shorin-Ryu Karate Kobudo Kai (see www.Seiyo-ShorinRyu.org & http://Grandmaster.pbwiki.com) and in 2004 was awarded the highest rank possible – a 10th degree black belt (red sash). Most of his students would be surprised to find that their instructor has been inducted into 14 other halls of fames over the past 10 years. The last was the World Black Belt Hall of Fame in Malaysia in 2005. And due to the efforts of these organizations and to a Saudi Prince, Hausel was presented an honorary PhD in Japanese Martial Arts Sciences in 2006, and had been presented certification as Kyoju (professor of martial arts) by Juko Kai International in 1997 In addition to karate, Hausel is certified in 18 martial arts, holds black belt ranks in 8 of those arts, and has spent the past 4 decades teaching martial arts and self defense classes at the Universities of Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming. And this all has been in his spare time.
It is unlikely that any of his students are also aware that their instructor is one of the top researchers in diamond and colored gemstone geology and exploration for which he is being inducted into the 2009 Marquis Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World. Hausel, a consulting geologist after retiring from the Wyoming Geological Survey in 2007, authored more than 600 papers and books on geology and diamonds. During the past 30 years he discovered hundreds of diamond, colored gemstone and gold deposits (http://DanHauselAuthor.pbwiki.com); and he is even an accomplished artist (http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/dan-hausel.html). Grandmaster Hausel became a student of karate in 1964, after joining a rock n’ roll band and letting his hair grow. In the 1960s this was considered anti-establishment. Thus to protect his rights, he and the rest of the band members signed up for karate lessons, but the classes were so intense that the rest of the band soon quite and relied on Hausel to protect them. So, you never know who you may be taking classes from at ASU.
John Tuzzolino, an SRC member and Sports Director of the Arizona Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America, can often been seen lifting weights at the SRC. He was recently featured in a 12News article, and is one of 12 veterans to be featured as a Cheerios cereal champion.

John Tuzzolino admits his spinal cord injury was a tough weight to manage at first. "A few years after I got hurt, I got into weightlifting, and a lot of things I used to do," he said. With each workout, he lifted more weight and began to clean up at state and national competitions.
He was also lifting the spirits of those who happened to working out with him. Betsy Grey has been working out with Tuzzolino for 15 years. "He always inspires me everytime I see him working out. I figure I have to work harder."
But his real focus has been sharing his experience with fellow veterans. "I kind of like walked that road before, so I can talk to them and I know what they're gonna go through and how things are; and I can answer their questions," Tuzzolino said.
At an autograph session at the VA Medical Center in Phoenix, his gold medal inspiration continues to earn him praise. Meanwhile, our next bowl of cereal may be all it takes for John Tuzzolino to challenge us to get in shape. Next month he'll be one of 12 veterans to be featured as a Cheerios cereal champion.
