Instructional Classes

Spring 2012-Registration for Session Two opens Monday, Feb 27!

It's never too late to learn a new skill! The Department of Campus Recreation provides a variety of diverse classes that focus on a healthy and active lifestyle, developing new skills, and fostering a sense of community. Our classes range from martial arts to yoga and provide progressive instruction from certified and well trained instructors here in the Phoenix area. If you are looking to participate in some unique and non-traditional activities, the Department of Campus Recreation offers some quality and fun programs just for you! Members of the ASU community and surrounding areas are welcomed to participate in the following programs:

Available Classes:

Aikido
Aikido is the most modern of the traditional Japanese martial arts.  Aikido aims to create victory without defeat by coordinating the practitioner’s movement with the movement of the attack and using the partner’s energy and momentum to resolve the confrontation.  Successful application of Aikido requires balance, awareness, timing, and self-control.  Great muscular strength is not required.  You may find that the practice improves your concentration, flexibility, and relaxation – benefits you may use off the mat as well.

Boxing
This program is designed to accommodate ALL adults, men, women, beginners and competitors alike. Class dynamics promotes the fundamentals of boxing in its purest form while students get the workout of a lifetime! The boxing program is an excellent way to improve body composition, cardiovascular health, and confidence as you learn the rudimentary and advanced techniques of this American pastime. Session 2 begins October 17.

Jujitsu
Ju-Jitsu is a traditional martial art incorporating elements of Karate (punching, kicking and blocking), Judo (throwing and submission holds) and Aikido (using your opponents energy to gain control). The ASU Ju-Jitsu club has been practicing on campus since 1976. We teach a wide variety of unarmed self-defense techniques, in a traditional martial art environment. The curriculum is very diverse, including throwing techniques, joint locks, takedowns, groundwork, striking, kicking and escapes.

Kung Fu

MATrix
The MATRIX program is developed based off of four different areas of movement training.  Parkour, Acrobatics, Break Dance, and Functional Fitness are taught both as individual arts and as ways to relate movements from one to the other.
Students will learn how to translate the kinesthetic knowledge of one movement art toward aiding in development of other movement arts. It is a program where you will always be challenged and you will always learn more.  It challenges the individual and the group.  The final goal of the MATRIX program is to teach people how to train sustainably: meaning the ability to teach you and to teach others.
