About the Clinic
The Campus Health Service (CHS) - Sports Medicine Clinic at the SRC is staffed by physicians who specialize in primary care sports medicine. The clinic is open for all ASU students with sports medicine / musculoskeletal injuries including but not limited to sprains, strains, fractures, acute and overuse injuries. Club and intramural athletes are encouraged to have a pre-participation physical exam prior to competing and these examinations can be completed at this location as well. Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment; however, walk-ins are welcome as well. Please stop by and see what is available to you at the Sports Medicine Clinic.
Dr. Bios
Steven Erickson, MD
Dr. Erickson is the head team physician and sports medicine fellowship director at Arizona State University. A native of Tucson, AZ, he completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Arizona. He then moved to Phoenix where he did his internal medicine residency at St. Joseph's hospital. After residency he spent 18 months in the sports medicine fellowship at Ball Memorial hospital in Muncie, IN. After his fellowship he returned to Phoenix to become part of the faculty at Arizona State University. In fall of 2000, he became the head team physician and in July 2003 he started the primary care sports medicine fellowship. Dr. Erickson also serves as a medical consultant to Major League Baseball umpires.
He is the proud father of triplet girls Katie, Lindsey, and Nikki who are now 11 years old and a one year old son, Michael. His wife Laurie is an OB/GYN in group practice in Phoenix with Maricopa OB/GYN Associates.
Deborah Garland, MD
Deborah R. Garland MD graduated from Arizona State University in 1982 and the University of Arizona Medical School in 1986, after growing up and attending high school in Scottsdale, Arizona. She completed a Family Medicine residency at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona in January 1990 with special interest in Sports Medicine. She began working at Arizona State University in 1990 opening up the original Sports Medicine Clinic at the Student Health Center. She was a volunteer Team Physician from 1991 to 1993 and became a full time Team Physician from 1993-2006. Since retiring as a Team Physician she has been providing care in sports medicine for the club sports and general student population at the Campus Health Service and Student Recreation Complex. Matthew Shores, MD Dr. Matthew Shores is a Phoenix, AZ native. He stayed close to home for his undergraduate studies at Grand Canyon University where he graduated in 2000. After graduating from GCU, Dr. Shores taught high school biology for one year at Greenway High School prior to attending the University of Arizona College of Medicine. He graduated medical school in 2005 and returned to Phoenix for a residency position in family medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. In addition to sports coverage, throughout residency Dr. Shores contributed multiple review articles on various sports medicine and musculoskeletal topics for publication. In 2008, upon completion of residency, Dr. Shores chose Arizona State University to pursue further training as a primary care sports medicine fellow. As a fellow at Arizona State University, Dr. Shores has been entrenched in Sun Devil athletics, covering football, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, basketball, to name a few. In addition to working with Sun Devil intercollegiate athletes, Dr. Shores works at Campus Health evaluating and treating all musculoskeletal issues that arise across campus. Dr. Shores is a proud family man. He and his wife, Katie, where married in 2001 and are the parents of two boys, Jake and Sam. As a life long sports fanatic, you don’t have to look far at the Shores’ home to find a football, basketball, baseball, or a television constantly streaming highlights, hopefully, Sun Devil highlights.
