SRC Pool Info

SRC Pool Info
- The pool is kept between 78 degrees and 82 degrees Fahrenheit year round.
- The pools is divided by two bulkheads and we refer to different parts of the pool by East, West, and Center.
- The East Pool is the shallow area, ranging from 3.5' to 6.0'. It has steps and adaptive dry ramp entrance, along with an adaptive swim lane.
- The Lap/Center Pool is is also 8 lanes by 25 yards, used mainly for fitness swimming.
- The West Pool is 8 lanes by 25 yards, used mainly for pool rentals. It is open for Lap swim M-F 11-1pm.
- Kickboards, exercise water-belts, fins and pull buoys are available free of charge. They are located on the pool deck.
- 1 mile = 36 laps or 72 lengths of the pool
SRC Pool Access for People with Disabilities
The Student Recreation Complex has a "dry" ramp that allows for lateral transfers in and out of the SRC pool. The dry ramp is located on the southeast side of the pool with wheelchair ramps on the northwest and northeast sides of the pool. The full and part-time staff are not trained to assist in the lateral transfers for reasons of safety and/or physical abilities.
We encourage and support individuals with disabilities to bring trained assistants as needed. Any trained assistant supporting a person with disabilities may enter our facility at no charge (must be in compliance with SRC policy by presenting a valid i.d.).
Aquatic Facility Rentals
Looking for something different to do with your student organization, department or group? Why not rent out the pool at the SRC. Cost depends on the area of pool rental and additional staffing necessary. Please contact src.reservation@asu.edu
Pool Temperature
Choosing the right temperature for a multi-use pool is a difficult task. Recreational swimmers and adaptive populations typically want the water at 84 degrees while active swimmers usually prefer it to be around 81 degrees and swim team users would like to see the temperature at 78. If the water is too hot is can become a health hazard to swim in. If the water becomes too cold, it can become very uncomfortable to swim in. The water temperature is based on and effected by several different environmental and mechanical factors such as air temperature, wind, and the amount of solar radiation hitting the water.
In an effort to combat the environmental factors affecting the temperature of the water the Student Recreation Complex uses a combination of pool heaters, pool covers and aerators. During the cooler months of the year (October through April) the pool heaters are run to maintain a constant pool temperature. Beginning in late October or as the night time temperatures begin to drop into the 60's pool covers are placed on the pool each night and taken off before the pool opens in the morning.
During the change of seasons (April through May and September though October) we can see drastic changes in temperatures throughout the day. Many times we will see daytime temperatures in the upper 90's and night time lows in the mid 50 's. As a result it becomes very difficult to maintain an exact temperature from day to day in the pool. As the outside temperatures begin to stay above 100 degrees each day, the pool temperature will begin rise with out the use of the heater. When the temperature begin to rise much above 80 degrees, aerators are turned on every night for several hours to attempt to cool the water through convection. When the outside air maintains a temperature above 90 for more than a few days it become more of a challenge to keep the water temperature below 85 degrees. This usually occurs during the hottest summer months. As a result the aerators are left on as long as possible each night and additional water is added to the pool to help dilute the warmer water with cooler water.
Due to all of the factors associated with the pool temperature it would be impossible to keep the pool at exactly 80 degrees year round. It will be the goal of the Student Recreation Complex to maintain that temperature as close as we can. During the cooler months of the year we will try to keep the temperature closer to 82 degrees to account for the colder air temperatures. During the summer we will try to keep the water temperature as close to 80 degrees as much as possible. Unfortunately there will be times when the pool drops below 78 degrees for a day or two and there will be times when the pool will raise above 85 degrees for a couple of weeks. We will continue to work closely with facility management to maintain the most consistent pool temperature possible.
